Howdy,
This video was made before the protests and the days following were extremely hectic. I am finally able to post this very out-of-date video. Jake has been editing these and is doing an amazing job. They are getting better every time. The voices of black people in America are being heard all over the flat earth. There will be more battles in this war and I will be there. All it takes is showing up to build the confidence of the crowd to express themselves appropriately. We are on the way to a better world. Keep up the great work Street Fighters.
With that being said let’s get into the bullshit that I like
- Vegan Mocha Fudge Ice Cream From Aldi - I love this stuff. It's the Aldi brand, and it's even better when you take an individual bag of Clancy's original potato chips, crush them up, and pour it on top.
- You gotta see this version of The Decline at red rocks with a live symphony - I wrote about Nofx in the punk zine, and I know they are a punchline on the internet as well, but I can't unlike them. They helped introduce 14 year old me to murdering the government, bondage, pissing off the man, queerness, and a lot of other thoughts deemed reprehensible to parents and authority figures.
The Decline is their masterpiece. It's pop punk with a trumpet and now it has an entire orchestra backing it up. I remember buying the CD when it came out, it was a clear disc and the sun covered the data on the other side. The song is an 18 minutes of very shallow observations and bratty parodies of government, drug use, war, religion, gun nuts, etc. Basically it's about as relevant in 1999 that it is today. There are lots of ups and downs and it's all exhilarating. It’s paced so well and every time I hear that opening cymbal I know that I am stuck listening to the whole thing. The full orchestra adds a lot to the performance and seeing the band smiling at each other makes it all a joyous occasion. The best NOFX performance I’ve seen (live included).
- Year Zero episode of The Trillbillies - An excellent episode that provides calm and perspective for a very tumultuous year. It sounds smart but it's dumb enough for me to get a lot from it. Tarence and Sean from Antifada break down our place in the long arc of history.
- Platejoy - I mentioned the idea of a meal delivery service that just sells the recipes on the show, something to eliminate all the waste and shipping with blue apron, hungry root, etc. but I finally found it. Platejoy is $60 for 6 months of meal planning and after you select your recipes and make your food calendar it asks you to check the pantry for ingredients you already have and then you export everything leftover to a shopping list or directly into Instacart.
When you sign up you fill out a questionnaire that asks
Do you want to do batch cooking or prefer single-serving meals?
Do you plan to shop at a specialty grocery store or want to keep it simple?
Are there any ingredients you don’t like?
and they have setups for low-sodium, weight loss, vegan, gluten-free, etc. 10-day free trial. Make a week of meal planning and put your nutrition on autopilot. So far the recipes are simple whole ingredients with great flavors and I was very happy to see all the bags full of fresh produce on the counter. I am really excited about this so far. I want and like to eat better but I get so bored with the stuff I pick.
If you like what you read here and you haven’t seen all of my High Five posts they can be found here.
Peace,
Brett
