I want to thank the new patrons up front. So...welcome patrons...I'm glad you're here. But seriously, thank you for believing in us and I hope you're enjoying the bonus content/black label.

One disappointment is that Patreon changed their processing method and we lost 26 patrons to declines. Hopefully the platform gets itself sorted out.

Black Label 05 is currently being written. I also want to address some messages/commentary we've received for Black Label. The overwhelming majority of messages we receive are positive but since the constructive criticism we receive are from patrons I think it's worth taking a moment to address some things.

So here it is:

1. Black Label can be too disturbing.

I agree that it is but that's sort of the point overall. Black Label is intended to be episodes exploring darker subjects and featuring darker audio content. I came up with the idea when researching Episode 32: Nick Stoutzenberger. I realized quickly that there are some cases that are too much for the general true crime listening crowd. The idea being that Black Label is a pay barrier between the standard feed and the darker feed.

2. Black Label has a lack of description/qualifiers/content warnings.

This is a difficult subject/criticism to tackle. One aspect of Black Label that is purposefully downplayed is the atmosphere/feel of the show. Black Label is intended to have a harsh and even(at times) surreal tone. The naming convention and the lack of descriptors are meant to add to the overall tone. In general Black Label can be a bit more experimental with the decision making process. Some of the decisions made for the creations of the show is intended to test boundaries more so than the main feed.

At the same time, a lot of care is taken to ensure that listeners aren't caught off guard by what they hear. There are still warning before particularly bad audio and an extreme enough episode will even receive an extra content warning tag as well as warning for caution before the episode starts. Black Label 02 was an episode where I took as much care as possible to stagger the episode in a way that things got worse and worse as you listened. Meaning that if it got too intense it would be easy to know when to hop off.

3. Why aren't there more Black Label episodes?

This is out of my hands. I am obsessed with creating this podcast. If it was up to me it's pretty much all I would do with my time. Right now it's impossible. We're limited by our budget. We're a team of three and putting out five produced episodes of podcast a month. If the patreon continues to grow the team can expand and the episodes can increase in number and length. Right now every penny of the patreon is going into the creation of the podcast. As long as we continue to grow and don't plateau early the show will continue.

And that's it for this update.  I'm going to keep a close eye on the overall opinion on choices made for Black Label. Feel free to make your voice heard. I always take it seriously.

Keep the fire burning,

Justin

No warning is necessary...it's called Black Label and it is "black". The host makes it clear Black Label is not for everyone, and it is not. Use your noggin folks. These guys are doing a great job and wouldn't want anything changed. True crime is not pretty. If it you need a warning you should go elsewhere.

Both shows are amazing! I’m a new listener and patron and I’m loving both. You are very respectful to all and if something is a bit much for any of us, there is pause or ff. We don’t have to listen to all parts of it. That’s not on you! Hoping you guys can continue what your doing!!!

Hi Justin, as always I love listening to your Obscura podcast. It is fair, honest and in as much as such things can be, bipartisan. You also do something rather unique. By welcoming us to your fireside, you are making us a part of the podcast. We are invested. We leave reluctantly but with a sense of camaraderie. Obscura is a beast. Black Lable is a monster. One that is hidden in the light but rages in the dark. And like monsters, you need to make sure that you stay well ahead of them. You made this b/l podcast because some stories no matter what, some stories need to be told. I think you have a good handle on separation of the two. You are doing an awesome job. I'll sit at your camp fire any night…

I just became a patreon because I’m so impressed with the writing and care and dedication that has gone into this podcast. I just discovered this show very recently and just had to sponsor. I’m too afraid to listen to the black label haha but I do appreciate the extra perk. I know it’s not for me however that won’t stop me from being a patreon to such a incredible show. Keep up the great work.

This was a lovely comment to read the day I opened it. My family dog Frank passed away earlier that day and I was very down. Your lovely comment served as a moral booster. Thank you Maggy.

Yes I saw the picture. I am sorry. He's was a member of your family and he will stay within your memory forever. ♥️

I became a patreon because you really care about what you do and the people that may be affected by the content. I'm not one that's easily disturbed but I will quit a podcast so fast if I think the host/writers/theme of a show is disrespecting the victims or listeners. I'm a young adult survivor of a lot of abuse and most recently stalking so that sort of boundary has become even more important to me. On a side note, I'm sure you know who I'm talking about but this other huge podcast and host has come under fire and it's making some waves in the true crime "fandom". Seeing what went down with them made me appreciate you even more. Thanks for doing what you do and bringing awareness about the dark side of humanity.

Justin, my sincere condolences for the passing of your Frank. My cat's name is Frank and he's the eldest to our cats. I don't even want to think of him being gone. It's always difficult. Thank you for your wonderful podcast and hard work. To you and your team.

I think Black Label has absolutely got enough content warnings! As I've mentioned on here before, I like that you play a preview of it on the main feed, which is enough to give us an idea of the content. It's well advertised that Black Label is darker and more distressing, which as you said is kinda the whole point of it, and I would have thought the whole reason people donate via Patreon to get access to it. Keep up the good work Justin! We love Obscura!

The only content warnings I’d like is for animal cruelty. I can deal with everything else just not that. I wonder if anyone else feels the same?

P.S maggyjames coment about needing to stay well ahead of the monster.. that’s what keeps me listening to black label. I’ve got PTSD from my own traumatic past. Once you’ve seen the monster in one form, you can’t stop searching it out in all its forms.. If you know the depths of what humans are capable of you can’t ever be trapped in fear again. But it’s a painful burden..

I’m a rather new member and listening from oldest to newest. I get so irritated when people sign up for a true crime podcast then complain it’s too gruesome!! I haven’t heard one that makes me want to stop listening. In the last 5 years I’ve listened to hundreds, if not thousands! Hahaha There have been 2 at the most that I felt physically sick over. But I still kept listening. I think we like to torture ourselves sometimes. Like riding the scariest ride at the amusement park or watching the scariest movie you can find! Just my 2 cents! 😁
