Update 3/4/2019: Upcoming Black Label, addressing some concerns, and more (Patreon)
Content
I want to thank the new patrons up front. So...welcome patrons...I'm glad you're here. But seriously, thank you for believing in us and I hope you're enjoying the bonus content/black label.
One disappointment is that Patreon changed their processing method and we lost 26 patrons to declines. Hopefully the platform gets itself sorted out.
Black Label 05 is currently being written. I also want to address some messages/commentary we've received for Black Label. The overwhelming majority of messages we receive are positive but since the constructive criticism we receive are from patrons I think it's worth taking a moment to address some things.
So here it is:
1. Black Label can be too disturbing.
I agree that it is but that's sort of the point overall. Black Label is intended to be episodes exploring darker subjects and featuring darker audio content. I came up with the idea when researching Episode 32: Nick Stoutzenberger. I realized quickly that there are some cases that are too much for the general true crime listening crowd. The idea being that Black Label is a pay barrier between the standard feed and the darker feed.
2. Black Label has a lack of description/qualifiers/content warnings.
This is a difficult subject/criticism to tackle. One aspect of Black Label that is purposefully downplayed is the atmosphere/feel of the show. Black Label is intended to have a harsh and even(at times) surreal tone. The naming convention and the lack of descriptors are meant to add to the overall tone. In general Black Label can be a bit more experimental with the decision making process. Some of the decisions made for the creations of the show is intended to test boundaries more so than the main feed.
At the same time, a lot of care is taken to ensure that listeners aren't caught off guard by what they hear. There are still warning before particularly bad audio and an extreme enough episode will even receive an extra content warning tag as well as warning for caution before the episode starts. Black Label 02 was an episode where I took as much care as possible to stagger the episode in a way that things got worse and worse as you listened. Meaning that if it got too intense it would be easy to know when to hop off.
3. Why aren't there more Black Label episodes?
This is out of my hands. I am obsessed with creating this podcast. If it was up to me it's pretty much all I would do with my time. Right now it's impossible. We're limited by our budget. We're a team of three and putting out five produced episodes of podcast a month. If the patreon continues to grow the team can expand and the episodes can increase in number and length. Right now every penny of the patreon is going into the creation of the podcast. As long as we continue to grow and don't plateau early the show will continue.
And that's it for this update. I'm going to keep a close eye on the overall opinion on choices made for Black Label. Feel free to make your voice heard. I always take it seriously.
Keep the fire burning,
Justin
