This is a film you show a friend and explain how brilliant it is and then watch them nod slowly as they try and figure out if they're just stupid or don't get it.

I saw this in the theater when it was first released and everyone left the theater saying, "What the hell was that!" When the humans or apes encountered the monolith, their intelligence was boosted, resulting in evolutionary leaps.

It is safe to say that the film was perceived being slow by the audience when it was first released. (It was definitely slow for me when I first saw it in my teenage years). The film revolutionized the future style of science fiction movies by its hard-science approach. The design and visuals were stunning and never-seen-before for their time, co-created by NASA advisors, one year before the first landing on the moon. The story is an adaption of the novel The Sentinel by famous science-fiction author Arthur C. Clarke, who was involved in the production. If you wish to find some more answers, I would recommend to watch the movie 2010 The Year We Make Contact (1984). The sequel is completely different in its style and much more accessible. One of the rare cases where the sequel manages to increase the appreciation for the original movie - even though it's so much different. Not to forget some great acting performances by Roy Scheider, Helen Mirren.. Last but not least: After watching the sequel you should be reconciled with HAL! 😊

Personally I don't like Stanley Kubrick. He is a genius, but he apparently is an absolute asshole and treats his actors and the everyone else on his movies like shit. He famously made one actor do 127 takes of a particular scene in The Shining in order to get the scene exactly the way that he wanted, so I'm out right there, but I also think that his movies are boring. He does amazing visuals, and I agree with people who say every frame of his movies is a work of art, but I still think they're boring. There was a much better and much more entertaining way of telling this story about the monoliths, and a million different ways to make it more clear what the movie was trying to say, but he famously does his movies exactly the way that he wants to and refuses to accept any input or suggestions from anyone else.

Also, because he is such an amazing director when it comes to visuals, the people who believe the moon landing was faked say that NASA hired Stanley Kubrick to direct the moon landing because he was the best director at the time for visual effects.
