largo778 .

the opening scene with the apes was better explained in the novel, but it showcased that the Monolith was affecting the evolution of at least one group of apes, resulting in evolutionary line that produced humans

largo778 .

the ending is so strange because it is suppose to be Dave trying to understand the ultimate secrets of the Universe (or at least some of them), things man just wasn't ment to understand at that point

I'd keep my spaceships white just so that we could tell where the moisture and grime builds up, and our robots could see when they've got it clean. Same as hospitals, really.

ha i have never actually seen this movie. ive seen a number of film analysis of it but never watched myself. so this will be my first watch through as well. thanks for this Mary. here goes

its interesting because this movie came out before the moon landings and was even partially produced as propaganda to get sopport from the public for nasa and the whole program. there is a wonderful series of videos on youtube by Collative learning explaining all the behind the scenes stuff including german influence on the american space program as well as subliminal analysis of the movie and its meaning . this movie probably has the most sophisticated subliminal content of any film ever made and is widely considered the most influential scyfy movie in history. influencing ridley scott with alien and blade runner and possibly indirect inspiration for all science fiction media

If you like classical music, do you ever pick out elements in movie scores that were borrowed from the classics? Holst, for example, has influenced a lot of movie scores.

It's hard for me to believe but this is considered one of the best movies ever made.

Very entertaining reaction Mary. Your reaction to the end credits appearing, signalling you would get no further explanation for the weird shit you just experienced, was priceless.

The monolith is a highly advanced computer and communication device. Four million years ago the aliens placed it with the early humans, and it helped nudge their evolutionary process along. Once the early humans had made contact with the monolith, the aliens whisked it away and buried it on the surface of the moon. They did this because they wanted to be alerted when humans had evolved to the point of being intelligent enough to achieve space travel. This is why the monolith emitted the loud signal from the moon, aimed at Jupiter, when the humans touched it. It was alerting the aliens man had finally evolved to that point and had found the monolith. The space scenes are very slow because this is a scientifically accurate representation of space and space travel in film form. All aspects of space travel, life in space, and ships were conferred upon with Arthur C. Clarke, who was a scientist and author who also happened to design the first space satellites.

It IS the greatest science fiction film ever created.

This is the quintessential "huh?" movie. Or at least it was til David Lynch came along. (Which I'd love you to cover, You should do a poll on Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet, and Eraserhead. (Or just watch all four). Also, If you haven't seen Twin Peaks... There are three seasons and a movie in that bucket. Some of the best TV ever made. Almost as good as the damn fine cherry pie. So 2001. I think the general consensus is that it covers the stages of our advancement. Trivia, HAL is one letter off of IBM - H -> I , A <- B , L -> M. In 1968 IBM was THE computer company. So why did he go mad? He had conflicts. He was programed to always tell the truth, but the Government told him to keep the secret of the monolith from the non-government crew. (Think about the "Cover Story / Need for absolute secrecy" meeting scene) From what I understand, There were three awake people, and three asleep people. The plan was for the pilots to be awake to fly to the mission, while the government agents who did know everything slept. Then they would swap, the pilots would wake up the agents, and then go to sleep, while the agents did their mission and research. Then when done, agents would go back to sleep and the pilots would drive home, still 100% in the dark about what the mission was. This movie has so much wild speculation about what it "really means" and I think that's cool. Oh, another piece of trivia. Why does HAL sing "daisy" when he dies? Because it was the first song the IBM computer was programed to sing. It's to show that he's reverted back to his infant state, his first form of verbal communication is all that's left. There have been books and video essays and, all sorts of stuff about this movie. The sequel is sort of crap though. Not really worth watching. (Here's this, about the Simpsons - https://simpsonswiki.com/wiki/2001:_A_Space_Odyssey) I finally just finished. I could tell you were less than thrilled at the ending. Or at least it seemed that way to me. I'm not going to link the hours of stuff explaining the movie, I feel like the quick and easy answer doesn't do it justice. But it's just, Jumps in the evolution of humans. From Man-apes to humans, all the way to space travel, going to the moon. We find the monolith the aliens set up, then that one, leads us to discovering another by Jupiter. The three guys that knew what was up were in cryostasis, til they were killed. So after HAL is shut down, the video is unlocked. This video was meant for the other 3 guys to watch after they woke up, and the two drivers went to sleep. Dave goes to find the monolith, and it leads him to the next one, through the stargate. Then the ending scene in the room, is just, time being weird, he keeps watching himself, the future version, but then he is that version. Who knows how long he was actually in that room, all the things that happened in between the moments we jumped to. I'm guessing that was something the aliens put together for him. Anyway, when he's ready, the monolith appears, and he evolves into the Star form, just like the ape people evolved into our human form. It's that drastic of a next step. As for HAL, if you listen closely, at the 1 hour 2 minute mark, it says no HAL 9000 has ever made a mistake, Or distorted information. That he had to distort information, was what messed him up, and this was the point of that whole "keep it secret" meeting scene. That's what I think anyway.

The screen is black at the start, because you are looking at the black monolith. The "apes" at the stat of the movie are humans, like pre-caveman. So here's what happens. We have our tribe, the weak tribe. They are afraid of other animals, can't kill the tapirs and are bullied by the other tribe. The scene where they are scared in the cave, there are aliens there setting up the monolith. In the morning they go out and find it, and it unlocks some sort of intelligence in them. The leader ape-man discovers tools, in the form of a bone, and they are instantly at the top of the food chain. The last scene of the intro is the bone tossed in the air, replaced by a space ship. Both tools. The bone, became everything. The bone became space stations and robots with advanced AI. Then at the end of the movie, we step through the stargate and begin the next stage, the star-child phase.

Wow never thought I could encounter such a terrible reaction to this classic movie. If you were watching this next to me I would have slapped the shit out of you smh. Unsubbed, garbage.

I too was very confused when i first watched it. This was the first sci fi film I ever seen and my dad showed it to me, but he too had to explain the details and all the questions I had. This film pioneered sci fi for its time. I could care less for the story, but it was great to look at and I seen it again in the IMAX rescanned in 70mm film was BREATHTAKING.

Your reaction – too slow, confusing - is what everybody’s reaction is; I got a kick out of all your “WTF’s” at the end as that was exactly my reaction when I first saw this. Fun fact: some scenes were cut because the pacing was too slow! But give Stanley Kubrick another chance watch Full Metal Jacket – no pacing problems in that one

What is the thought process here? Threaten violence because someone doesn't hold a movie in the same regard as you? Just another online idiot....
