I don't recall anything is lost in the theatrical cut. It's more of adding detail that enriches the existing material. Same thing with Michael Mann's The Last of the Mohican's and Ridley Scott's Kingdom of Heaven.

This extended version of Gladiator is not a director's cut. The theatrical cut was the version Ridley Scott wanted to release. The extended cut is just scenes that were left on the cutting room floor added back in by the studio. I personally prefer the theatrical cut. It has a much better pacing.
