The Xs on the beach are anti tank barriers. Makes it hard for tanks to assault the beach. The intro was basically D-Day. Everything that could go wrong did go wrong, but wave after wave of men came out of the boats directly into machine gun fire (because of everything that went wrong before the landing) and eventually overwhelmed the Germans. This was one of the turning points of the war. It is an interesting battle to read up on.

Looking forward to this one.

I’m glad you made it through the first part. I think it’s one of the hardest scenes to watch in cinema history. The reason it was so bad was that the tanks were supposed to go ashore first to protect the soldiers but they all got stuck and none of them made it ashore, so the soldiers were totally exposed. There’s an amazing story about how the Allies created a fake army poised to invade a different part of France, complete with inflatable tanks, and convinced Hitler that they were going to invade a different spot. Hitler bought it completely, and moved the bulk of the German army to defend that area, so the invasion at Normandy wasn’t even facing the majority of the German forces, and yet it was an absolute massacre, even though the Allies did eventually take all of the beaches. Most countries (including Australia, I’m sure) lost more soldiers at D-Day than they did for the entire rest of the war combined.
