Fun fact: The original name for the hero wasn’t Shazam, it was Captain Marvel. He still said Shazam to transform. But because Marvel comics is Marvel comics and they have their own Captain Marvel they sued. So that’s he is called Shazam.

This Captain Marvel was originally published by Fawcett Comics, and was, in the 1940s, even bigger than Superman for a while. He was also the first comic book character to get a film. Then in the 1950s, DC Comics sued Fawcett and some other companies, claiming their superheroes were just ripoffs of Superman. Fawcett stopped publishing Captain Marvel and ended up licensing the character to DC in the early '70s and by 1991 DC had acquired the rights to all of the characters. The thing is, Marvel had introduced their own Captain Marvel in the late 1960s, so DC marketed their Captain Marvel under titles with the word Shazam, which caused lots of people to think the character was named Shazam. I don't think there was any court case here, just that Marvel already had a comic titled Captain Marvel, and they didn't want brand confusion. Per wikipedia, Marvel did send a cease and desist letter over the subtitle of the Shazam comic, which DC promptly changed from "The Original Captain Marvel" to "Earth's Mightiest Mortal." In 2011, during one of DC's many reboots of their comics, they just rebranded the character as Shazam and his family as the Shazam family rather than the Marvel family, ceding the Captain Marvel name to Marvel. That 2011 reboot also introduced Pedro, Eugene, and Darla as characters. Previously, the main "Marvels" had been Captain Marvel, Captain Marvel Jr. (Freddy), and Mary Marvel. In the past there had also been a ton of others. There was the unpowered Uncle Marvel, three kids also named Billy Batson who could also draw on the power of Shazam because of their shared name who became the Lieutenant Marvels (Tall Billy, Fat Billy, and Hill Billy), and of course Hoppy the Marvel Bunny. And there was also Captain Marvel's best friend, Mister Tawky Tawny, a humanoid tiger who wore a suit and lived among humans.

When i was a kid i was infatuated with the shazam isis power hour..and in love with isis i would have been 5 to 8 at the time. They were like drivin around in a winnebago….
