Holy shit it’s a veritable onslaught of Mary posts.

I imagine this might be something already said on YouTube comments, but at the risk of being redundant =P I don't think any version of the show gives subtitles to the Chinese, which is probably their intent. The pronunciation of Chinese is likely pretty inaccurate anyways, but it kinda makes sense that their Chinese would be a far cry from what it once was on Earth. Their vision of the future is that before Earth was destroyed, America and China were the two dominant superpowers. But anywho, it's just up to the viewer to deduce the general meaning of the Chinese just from context. As for River's parents, the reason they didn't want Simon continuing to look for River in those flashbacks is because they don't want to believe River is actually in any danger. In one of the previous episodes, Simon detailed that River was "going to a prodigious school" because she's essentially a genius. In that episode he also talked about the letter he received from her, which is the same letter that was shown in this episode, where River had to encode a message saying "they're hurting us." Simon tried to convince their parents that River needed to be rescued, but the idea of River being in danger seemed absurd to them, and they chose to believe that River was perfectly safe at that "school" because it was more convenient. So basically they think Simon is delusional and is getting involved in seedy dealings, looking for information in disreputable places (the "blackout zone" Simon's dad was talking about) for no good reason. They're still awful parents, but not because they don't care about River. They're awful because they don't believe their own son and care so much about their standing in society that they don't want to risk that in the off chance that Simon is actually right about River being in danger. Anywho, that's enough for this essay. =P Btw, just out of curiosity, does the version you're watching have recaps of past episodes? I've noticed when trying to sync my Apple TV copy that your uncut reactions don't include the recaps. Might help if you're going for long periods of time between episodes, since these kinds of details are easy to forget, but are also quite pivotal to the greater storyline.

I think River fed Simon the grape all as a set-up for the poison joke.

Gorram is an exclamation used to express anger and frustration. It was first used in the TV series Firefly. Gorram carries approximately the same meaning and emotional connotations as the American English term, "God damn."
