A sad part about Sméagol is that even Gandalf had hope for him to beat his demons and come back. If you notice in the end when Gandalf saves Frodo and Sam with the eagles, Gandalf brings three. The third was meant for Sméagol.

Frodo was given permission to sail to the Undying Lands because he carried the ring to Mordor and he left in an attempt to heal the wounds he received from the witch king on weathertop and shelob's sting, which both caused him pain on the anniversaries when he received them. If it makes you feel any better, after Rosie dies, Sam got to sail to the Undying Lands to spend his last days with Frodo. Gimli got to go with Legolas too, so he could hang out with Galadriel lol.

Denethor was driven mad from using the Palantir for so long a time, just as it did Saruman. The books were an allegory for war, and the effects it has on a person. For example, the bonds that are made during war, and those that are kept after, the horrors of war, and the lasting effect it can have.

I also didn't cry too hard the first time. But the second time i was a mess! I guess because you know what's going to happen and you get to appreciate their bravery and sacrifice even more.
