So cool - really excited to see you reacting to LOTR. I’m no expert on Tolkien or Martin, so I won’t pretend to speak on authority in comparing the two. But, suffice it to say, there are some definitive differences (as I’m sure you can already tell even with the film adaptation so far). Martin’s world is much more...lived in, for lack of a better term. It’s socio-politically layered in a way that feels very real and relatable to most people today. The characters and situations are likewise often more morally layered and complex. But this takes little away from Tolkien’s achievement. I think what’s important to remember about Tolkien is that he’s basically the progenitor for this whole lane of fantasy we’re accustomed to today (“sword and sorcery”). He drew on a lot of older mythologies (European in particular) to make his world. And I think most of his acolytes would tell you that’s what he is primarily; a world-builder. He was a philologist (language expert), and that drove a lot of that world-building, carefully crafting the cultures and histories of the various factions/races in that world down to their very languages. That’s not to take anything away from his ability to craft story itself. But I think the most noticeable difference between the two writers is just the approach and emphasis on the narrative. Where Martin’s building blocks were the complex and dynamic relations between his characters, Tolkien’s were the history and lore of the world itself. Tolkien kicked down the doors for everyone who followed. I think the mistake that could be made is to focus on how far he made it into the room as opposed to how masterfully he kicked that door down. And the difference becomes far more pronounced when you actually read Tolkien. I love Martin’s writing. I’d never try to detract from it. But Tolkien’s writing...was a different experience altogether. He was a poet (literally), and he did nothing less than paint worlds with his words.

I don't know if you would fit in a hobbit's house Mary. Hobbits are about 3 ft 7 inches. 42 inches. They have those hobbit houses still there in New Zealand which is one of the reasons why I plan on going as soon as the pandemic is over.

Liv Tyler IS beautiful in this film. She’s the daughter of the singer of a band called Aerosmith (Steven Tyler). Aerosmith hails from my home state. 😊
