Man - I made two long posts earlier this morning and I have no idea where they went. They both disappeared after editing (lol). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Figured I'd write up another couple of posts in case my old ones don't magically return(?) Anyways, fantastic reaction, as always! One thing I did want to clear up (and it's not a spoiler) is the confusion regarding the letter. So, if you recall, Jonas originally received the letter in the box that was sent to him by his older self ("Stranger" Jonas), via Regina at the motel. That is the one he burns. When he sees it again, it's when Ines gives it to him. But they are both the same letter. If you lay it out chronologically (from the perspective of the letter itself) it goes like this...Michael writes the letter. Ines keeps it, unopened, until the specified time/date. Younger Jonas confronts Ines. Ines reveals the letter and gives it to younger Jonas. Jonas holds onto it his entire life, until he, as older "Stranger" Jonas, sends it to his younger self in that box. Younger Jonas then burns the letter, and that is the final fate of the letter. What you see is the existence of the same letter, from two different time periods, on the same timeline. Much in the same way that Adam and Jonas, from two different periods, can be interacting on the same timeline. Hope this makes sense of things!

Alright, so one other thing that really kills me about this episode (and I think it gets overlooked because of the suicide bombshell) is the ontological nature of the romance between Jonas and Martha. You might recall the concept of the "bootstrap paradox" being discussed by Tannhaus earlier in the season. It's a concept that plays pretty prominently over and over in this story. It's when a thing or event somehow reaches back through time to in some way help cause itself. A great example is Tannhaus' book, "A Journey Through Time". How did it come to be? Well, Tannhaus wrote it. But, only sort of(?) Because he actually received a copy of it before he ever sat down to write a thing. So...where did it really come from? It's a paradox. I think this episode reveals that the same is kind of true about Jonas' and Martha's relationship. The slightly older version of Jonas initiates the kiss by the lake on that day. And, later on, Martha pushes things further in her bedroom at the party. But, from each person's perspective (Martha and younger Jonas), the other person made the first move! So if the older Jonas, who had been smitten with Martha for quite a while already at that point, didn't stop by the lake, kiss Martha, and give things a nudge, would things have even sparked between them at all? Maybe at some point. But we have no way of knowing. Their blossoming romance, like the time-travel book, seems to almost have created itself out of thin air! Of course, this could all be over-analyzing on my part. But I feel like it's a thought that really resonates with so much else in the show. From my perspective, all of this crazy complex webbing of interconnected paradoxes really just spins out from, and gravitates around, the one true, prime paradox of the story...the love that Jonas and Martha share.

This episode was when I realized that this might be the best show of all time.
