Interesting fact. This "three way deadlock" is inspired by 17th century Chinese game Sansukumi-ken, which is pretty much an old version of rock paper scissors, but more like toad slug snake. I think it goes like snake>toad, toad>slug, slug>snake or something. When Sannin fight each other it's like 3 people playing rock paper scissors and cannot decide a winner since they're equally matched. Imagine living in some Ninja Village like 20 years before this when you're at war with Konoha and you're being attacked by all of these 3 summons. That's why the Sannin are so renowned and they're mentioned separately from other Jonin.

Her summon being a slug is weird to Western audiences, but totally unsurprising for Japanese audiences, as the three sannin are based on characters from the tale of the great jiraiya, who use toad, slug and snake magic.
