I spent quite some time thinking of the classifier regarding the monster's ranking system for Demon Sword Maiden. The direct translation would be Low-Rank Initial Stage, Low-Rank Middle Stage, etc.

I felt that the direct translation would be too long. So I came up with several options:

Option A:

  • Low-Rank
    Low-Rank+
    Superior Low-Rank
    etc...

Option B:

  • Lesser Low-Rank
    Low-Rank
    Superior Low-Rank
    etc...

Option C

  • Low-Rank
    Low-Rank+
    Low-Rank++
    etc...

Option D

  • Low-Rank
    Low-Rank Plus
    Low-Rank Plus Ultra
    etc...

Option E

  • Low Rank-
    Low Rank
    Low Rank+
    etc...

Obviously, I chose option A, but options C is not bad either. What are your thoughts? Which option do you prefer? If there is none, what other option would you suggest?

If the direct translatation is too long I'd abriviate it if I was you. But whether you use a direct translation or a close proximinant, isn't that important. What I feel is far more important is you remain consistant and use the same terminology through out the work. I cant remember if you've already used the direct translation in past chapters but if you did than I'd recommend you use an abriviation of the direct translation as it would be a way of remaining consistent and shortening it. If you haven't used the direct translation I'd recommend 1 star Low rank, 2 star low rank, 3 star low rank. I've seen rank system in another ln and I like it cause it not only rolls of the tongue nicely but its meaning is clear and understandable with no explanation.

Well, what I've learned in my long years of translating is that: direct translation is never a good idea. That's what a beginner does. What I mean is that, if I am to use the direct translation, then onmyoji would end up as "yin-yang master" and shikigami will be "formula god".
