Hello! I'm back today with a massive collection of tiles for the overworld.

Last week I shared these new tiles for the overworld -- the idea is that the new style of cliffs can create much nicer-looking world maps than the originals, while being more useful gameplay-wise, because the beach separation can be used to gate locations where the player can dock vehicles:

In that post, I said that I planned to extend the new style to cover multiple terrains and biomes -- so I have that for you here today!

This is a really big set of tiles, that should cover all of the major biomes that were included in the original TF series:

  • darker grass for swamps/jungles
  • gray grass for the "world of ruin"
  • brown dirt
  • gray rock/gravel
  • snow
  • sand desert

All of these biomes come with tiles that transition into the regular grass and also into sand to create beaches.

Notably, I've also got some new dirt path tiles. This is based on a new dirt texture (used for the recolored rock/gravel too). Just like the new grass texture, this dirt is designed specifically for the world map -- it's intended to look like a "zoomed out" version of the original dirt terrain used in the Time Fantasy sets.

The above "master sheet" isn't formatted for specific use. It's the full set so you can make use of them however works best for you. Because, of course... well, on the subject of RPGMaker:

Obviously, this tileset is way too big for normal use in RPGMaker, which has strict tile limitations. There's just not enough room on the "TileA5" sheet for everything there. And the other terrain-layer sheets are autotile-based, and... really, the biggest problem is with the autotile system, which makes use of half-sized "minitiles". This forces autotiles to look blocky.

The dirt paths are fine-- since they're meant to be like roads, it makes sense that they are based on straight lines and corners anyway. The problem comes with the cliffs.

I went ahead and converted the cliffs to the autotile-style. This is what it looks like in RMMV:

Not perfect, but honestly it came out better than I expected it to.

If you want to download the cliff A2 set that I made, you can grab it here:

More complicated would be the animated water tiles... but it might be possible. If you think it's worth it to convert the water cliff edges into RPGM-style autotiles like this, let me know in the replies. If there's demand for it, then I can make some time this weekend and see what I can do to get them into an RPGM-friendly format.

I still think that the intended look with the full tiles is much nicer, because we have enough room to make nice corners that can make natural-looking wavy diagonals. Personally if I was using these in RPGMaker, I'd consider the old technique of "parallax mapping".

Okay, that's it for now. I'll see you next time.

Thanks!
