Hello! Today's release is a bit different, and special!

I've mentioned before that I was working on a little side project with a "lo-bit" visual style. There's some interest in these graphics that I've developed for this style, and I'm happy to share these with you today!

Note: I originally created these for my own use, but I'm happy to share these with you as a special patreon exclusive. Right now, I'm not planning on turning this into any sort of asset pack for the general marketplace. As I develop more of the game, I can share more here though! -- if there's interest from patrons.

Because this collection of assets was designed for my own use, it has some unique features...

The two primary tilesets use different tile-sizes:

  • the terrain-layer uses 8x8 tiles,
  • and the object-layer uses regular 16x16 tiles.

GameMaker Studio allows for each tile-layer to have its own grid-size, and I came up with this idea to create a cool visual identity for this set.

I limited myself to specific color counts for each tile: 3 colors per tile for the 8x8 set, and all objects (character sprites, animations, and tiles in the 16x16 set) are limited to four colors and transparency (generally 3 colors+black+transp).

Because the way the smaller tiles work together, it can be used to have a blending effect (as seen around the water and dirt path in my example above). The main purpose of the small tiles is so they can be used to provide some random texture to the terrain.

None of this is accurate to any sort of specific old-school restriction, but it still captures the feeling of retro games, while looking really cool (at least, I think it looks cool...).

You can see how it looks in the preview image above. I think it creates a really great effect.

Of course, if you're using an engine that's more restrictive with the tile-sizes (like RPGMaker for example) -- then you're welcome to edit the 8x8 tileset into a new tileset that compiles them into 16x16 squares. It should be pretty simple.

The 8x8 terrain-set includes animated tiles for water. The four side-directions are animated for the shoreline, as well as the outside corners. The inside corners use a fixed tile. Inside, a static blue tile is used, which doesn't need animation. You can see how it comes together in the example .gif I provided above.

Also, I've included a little four-frame animated flame. It's a simple animation that's designed to work with the torches in the tileset. You can see it in my example above.

Okay -- here's the downloads:

I hope that you can find some use from these!

If this lo-bit set isn't for you, no worries-- I'll be back next week with more fresh stuff in the usual style-- based on ideas from the request thread.

Have a wonderful weekend! See you soon.

Thank you!
