Hello! Today's release is small update on the in-progress character style, and it comes with a new decent-sized asset download. :-)

Last month, I shared a lot of the progress on the new character style that is currently in development.

One of my major goals is flexibility for these sets, which includes modular pieces. Because of this approach, I want every character to work with every animation. This means two things-- 1: a lot of planning is required up-front, and 2: each additional animation will be increasing the workload exponentially, because every future character asset will need to work with it.

I'm trying to figure out the most efficient ways to do these things, which means minimizing the amount of animations and maximizing flexibility-- so, for example, when looking at the unique emotion animations that you see in some Time Fantasy sprites-- those special animations won't be efficient to add in the new style.

I've come up with this solution: simple animated emotion "balloons" -- you're probably familiar with these-- lots of games already make use of a similar approach. In fact, I've released similar animations in the past for other styles.

So here are some new animations that I've designed to go with the new character style.

These are also versatile enough for general use, so I'm releasing them here today. Consider this a special pre-release for patrons.

Here's how these animations looks in action (this scene was made in RPGMaker2003):

If you have more ideas for suggestions for different emotions that I can add, go ahead and let me know. Since these aren't tied to the character sprites, it'll be easy to make more.

 Downloads:

The downloads for these are a little different than the usual releases, because of the general nature of these animations. Hopefully one of these options will work for you:

  • Emote Animations Working Sheet - 100%
This set is a "working file" sheet that includes the generic sprite for character alignment.  It includes all of the finished animations in simple vertical columns. This set is for people who are going to be re-arranging the assets for your own specific use.
  • Emote Animations Sheet - 100% - RM2K3 (zip)
The animations are arranged on 4 individual sheets compiled in a .zip file. These are formatted for use as battle animations in RPGMaker 2003. These have a 100% default size, so are likely the best option for general use with the least hassle.
  • Emote Animations Sheet - 200% - RMMV
These ones are arranged in a format for use in RPGMaker MV. They are upscaled by 200%. All of the animations are included on a single sheet.

I'll be back later in the week with something from this month's request thread. See you soon.

Thanks!

We’re gonna need a lightbulb chief. Perhaps a bit of confusion with a question mark. Some anger clouds. Maybe a hamburger for hunger in honor of that Discord icon. A musical note as well for all that singing.

how do we use these in mv/mz? are they to replace the balloon.png? I'm a little confused.
