This was the battle that the WWE won, and it was self inflicted. Let the long slow decline into nothingness begin for WCW.

I dunno why people are so angry about Bret being the ref in the Eric vs Larry match. Kurt Angle was the ref in a Jarrett vs Sting match when he debuted in TNA and no one complains about that. It was good that WCW didn't shoot their wad with Bret and blow a potential buyrate when he finally had a PPV match. Bret didn't need to wrestle here because Hogan vs Sting WAS the buyrate. Why not put Bret's first match on a show that NEEDS a big match, which they did when Bret wrestled Ric Flair at Souled Out. I think Bret as the referee was the right move.

I wouldn't say Kurt Angle's TNA debut was as important or as historically significant as Bret's defection to WCW. I do agree Bret didn't need to be on Starrcade in any kind of match at all, but likewise, he also didn't need to referee an attraction match. He could've debuted at starrcade as a surprise at the end of Hogan vs Sting, he could've debuted with an opening advertised promo, he could've ran in to help Benoit during The Flock beatdown, or he could've been left off the card altogether... any option was better than a guest referee (imo). The match was a trainwreck too which doesnt help matters.
