Atlanta has some scenes that may mirror black culture in NYC to some extent. A lot of blacks of all sorts and being a "blavity black", Afropunk, and black hipsters have great representation. Of course everything has a southern spin on it. As for the play and its reception, I am not surprised that whites, of all folks, would condescendingly try to convince blacks and others that they dislike it because they "just don't understand it the way I do". I have experienced in these white academic spaces how whites and white aligned folks will dismiss the opinions or ideas of URMs even if they are reasonable. Even when there is a fairly definitive answer (say its something science related), you can give an answer, and they will ignore or deny, and then wait until they get the same answer from an "authority figure" who is usually not URM (and much less likely black). Before that, there is nothing but unwarranted argument and resistance to my input. I've experienced this and it is annoying. And yes, some black belt Alabama counties still have Hook Worm. 1st world problems to be able to lecture someone on specialized forms of sexual liberations.
