Remember that tomorrow we will have another Patreon-exclusive live interview, this time with my old friend Professor Ben Frey of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Professor Frey will talk about and answer questions about how and why communities shift languages, and how and why dying languages can be revitalized, drawing especially on his experiences as a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and a fluent speaker of Cherokee.

That live interview is tomorrow, Saturday 30 July, at 10:00 a.m. U.S. Mountain time. Zoom link here, passcode: Sequoyah

I'm also attaching to this post an experimental "podcast" episode that I recorded with my old friend Dr. Luke Gorton. I get a lot of requests for audio-only content in addition to my books and videos, and while I've recorded audiobooks, I've been reluctant to simply re-upload my videos as audio-only files because they lose both the text that is often important to present visually, as well as the Rocky Mountain landscape that I think is so important (if no one else does, haha). I also suffer from a profound lack of time to do any kind of structured podcast in addition to all the time that I spend on videos and writing etc. right now. But Luke and I had the idea for an occasional, conversational podcast with a pretty casual format where we could talk about academic subjects but also whatever else we thought was worth discussing from our perspective as attempted public intellectuals, without the pressure of any particular schedule or format.

So here is a tentative, experimental episode 1 of that "podcast," tentatively and ridiculously called "Two Ling Circus." For those of you interested to check it out, what do you think? What would you change, cut, or add? For example he and I have disagreed about how much anyone would want to hear the first 15 or so minutes of this podcast, so I'm curious to see what you think.

For now, thank you for your continued support and kindness, and all the best,

Jackson Crawford

P.S. 1. I had to rewrite this entire post three times because Patreon kept somehow inadvertently "devouring" it. The bugginess of this platform is sometimes a profound curse.

P.S. 2. Speaking of this buggy platform, most of you who will see this will be tired of seeing it and most people who need to see it never will: My Patreon messages don't work. I don't get notifications for them, and  there's nothing on my home page to show me when there is or isn't a  message. I can't even always see them when I check for them manually,  and you won't see it if I reply! The best ways to get in touch are: a)  just to comment on posts like this, b) to post in the  Community page,  or c) to email my assistant Stella at [admin AT JacksonWCrawford.com]--remember the 'W' between my first and last names in that domain name.

I haven’t listened to the whole podcast yet because I keep being interrupted, but I’m almost through the first 15 minutes and I don’t mind it at all. I think I’ve said this before, but I like rambling conversations. And to me, that’s what a podcast is (or maybe I’ve just listened to too much Joe Rogan and that’s what I’m used to lol). I’m looking forward to hearing the rest of it.

I’ve had a chance now to listen to the whole podcast and I really enjoyed it. Interesting topics and easy to follow conversation. I like Claire, she reminds me a bit of myself.
