Here’s some vocabulary related to time and its passing.


After a brief time in civilization this weekend, I’m headed back to the high mountains over the next few days (so replies to messages etc. will be nil for a while again). But I’m hoping to tackle a lot of big video topics along the way that I hope make you happy.

One of my fave alt. rock bands, Garbage, wrote a song not so long ago called "Time Will Destroy Everything." While at first that may seem bleak, I think it's also comforting. Thanks for another cool topic.

In Modern Faroese: tíð > tíð /tʰʊi:j/ (abstract term for time) tími > tími /tʰʊi:mɪ/ (overwhelmingly means hour, but can be used in the archaic meaning of time) líða > líða /lʊi:ja/ but tíð can also ganga /kɛŋka/ gamall > gamal /kɛamal/ aldinn > N/A, but we do have øld /œlt/ which can mean age (steinøld/bronsuøld) or more commonly a century (21. øld) forn > fornur /fotnʊɹ/ so forn siðr > fornur siður ungr > ungur /ʊŋkʊɹ/ nýr > nýggjur /nʊ(j)ʧ:ʊɹ/ byrja > byrja /pɪɹja/ although this is only one word of many that mean this and it depends on context enda > enda /ɛnta/, I only found one reference to the reflexive/medo-passive form but it was hidden in the regular form and that was the past tense form endaðist, so it exceedingly rare I wish you well in the future, dr. Crawford, ending something is always marked by what we in Faroese call sorgblídni /sɔɹkplʊ(j)tnɪ/, best translation would probably be melancholy but not sure if it really covers it either. Vemodig is what it's called in Danish. All the best and blíðan byr.
