So, the origin of this scene comes from an actual D&D game I was in the other day with my friend Neil.
He was GM, and it was a one on one game, as most of our games tend to be, since we don't yet have a regular group.

Anyway, we were Roleplaying a part of my Characters origin story leading in to the main story campaign; an original custom one created by Neil.

My character, Nathanial Blackbriar, and outcast LV1 wizard living in a world where magic is feared, and those who use it hunted by the church. Things maybe changing, but they have not yet.

So, i was in my woodland hovel, preparing to sleep, (roll perception) I sense the presence of someone approaching my clearing.

I look out my doorless doorway and notice a light... someone was coming.

"THis is too late for someone, I fear that those witch hunters from earlier have come for me!"

I pour water on my meagre fire, and my hovel is filled with a dim light as I hide by the door, eyeing through the poorly made walls, following the light.

It approaches, and two men in crudely cut burlap masks walk in to view, one with a torch, the other with a club.

They try to be stealthy, despite holding a bright light, looking around for signs of movement as they get closer.

When close enough they call out "GET OUT 'ERE WITCH!"

I continue to hide, watching them as I pull out my +4 Dagger holding it.

The call out, trying to goad me out, but i remain silent. The one with the club leaves for a moment.

I decide to take a chance and use CONTROL FLAMES to snuff out the torch and bring the area in to darkness.

(ROLL FAIL)

The flame flickers, and the witch hunter gets annoyed, "DON'T MAKE ME COME IN THERE AND DRAG YOU OUT, WITCH!"

By now his ally has returned, this time with manacles in his other hand.

THey are going to take me, and likely throw me before some magistrate, or bishop, and be tried as a witch.

I cast BACK-DRAFT (Pyro version of Thunderwave) A blast of firey air bursts from me as I step out in to view and hits the Witch Hunters, (they pass a saving roll taking half damage) but my spell is not ass effective as I had hoped; they were not pushed back giving me time to escape, and now they are furious.

They begin to punch and try to club me, but I dodge with ease, jumping away.

I see a stone on the floor and Cast CATAPULT aiming to knock out the one with the torch, so I can  hopefully cause the area to dim.

(I roll a 1 on attack.)

and this is what happens...

NEIL: THat's a fail. A SUPERB fail.

Me: Damn it... how bad?

Neil: Well, the stone wobbles for a moment on the ground before it suddenly shoots out and clearly goes in a direction that is NOT directly at the witch hunters and you can hear it hit the water of the small nearby lake...

Me: and another splash and another OOOO I SKIPPED THE STONE!

(both chuckling)

Neil: Yes, you skip the stone and everyone is impressed, both witch hunters look at you and attack you again!

Or something like that XD it was a fun session XD killed two goblins, got taken prisoner, caused two guards to have a fight in the dark so i could sneak passed them, and got framed for murdering a priest and had to run to the next town and stow away on a ship... and thus... how I arrive at the main campaign!
