Perfume: Story Of A Murder Movie Description:

With his incredible talent for discerning scents, Jean-Baptiste Grenouille (Ben Whishaw) is one of 18th-century France's finest perfumers. He becomes obsessed with capturing an elusive aroma: the scent of young womanhood. His search takes a deadly turn, and when the bodies of 12 young females are found, panic breaks out, with families rushing to lock up their daughters.

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer is a 2006 period psychological thriller film directed by Tom Tykwer, who co-wrote the screenplay with Andrew Birkin and Bernd Eichinger, based on the 1985 novel of the same name by Patrick Süskind. The film stars Ben Whishaw, Alan Rickman, Rachel Hurd-Wood, and Dustin Hoffman. Set in 18th-century France, the film tells the story of Jean-Baptiste Grenouille (Whishaw), an olfactory genius, and his homicidal quest for the perfect scent.

Producer Eichinger bought the film rights to Süskind's novel in 2000 and began writing the screenplay together with Birkin. Tykwer was selected as the director and joined the two in developing the screenplay in 2003. Principal photography began on July 12, 2005 and concluded on October 16, 2005; filming took place in Spain, Germany, and France. The film was made on a budget of 50 million (est. $60 million), making it one of the most expensive German films.

A co-production of Germany, France, Spain and the United States, Perfume was released on September 14, 2006 in Germany, December 26, 2006 in the United Kingdom, and December 27, 2006 in the United States. It grossed over $135 million worldwide, of which over $53 million was made in Germany. Critics' reviews of the film were mixed; the consensus was that the film had strong cinematography and acting but suffered from an uneven screenplay.

AHHHH MY WEIRD LIL MOVIE. ok so...I know this movie isn't everyone's cup of tea. But it's not supposed to be. And the music is CHEF'S KISS. Honestly, the book is even weirder. Like the movie TONED DOWN some of the weird. And honestly, I am thankful for it cause in the book, Alan Rickman's character lusts for his own daughter. Which...no. Don't like. I think the point of it all is about how we are kind drawn in and disgusted by macabre things. The film constantly shows beautiful things side by side with grotesque. Kind like of like it's trying to explain why some people get obsessed with serial killers maybe? Like you NEVER are rooting for the protagonist but you are fascinated by him. And I think the author was trying to write from the perspective of someone who could do such disgusting things and why would they. How could someone do such things to their fellow humans? The author's answer was that something had to be something fundamentally wrong with the murderers's OWN humanity. One important piece was that the protagonist didn't have his own personal scent so he coveted the scent of beautiful young virginal women to make up for it. However at the end, he realizes that won't get him what he truly wants...real human connection. He is forever barred from that because he can only ever fake it with perfumes. Hence him taking his own life. Torture wouldn't matter because he was already at the peak of it with that realization. It's a weird book and movie but I do enjoy it.
