Derick is a man created to protect his city by hunting and killing demons, creatures that only exist to corrupt and kill humans. He is a man comfortable with his purpose and all that it means for his short life.

Only things aren’t as they seem.

Maybe demons aren’t as one sided as he has been told. Maybe the people who made him have ulterior motives.

Derick’s certainty is shaken when a demon does something that should be impossible. When a demon saves his life, instead of ending it.

This story is a demonstration that inspiration can come from just about anywhere. A song is responsible for it. Well, not even a song, one line from the opening narration of the song. I don’t remember the song, although, knowing me, it’s somewhere in my giant playlist, or even the line in detail.

What I remember of it is something about a man with a demon stuck inside him battling it and himself…possibly.

What I do remember is the image that came as I heard that line.

A man running on the rooftop, seemingly chasing someone in the alley below. And the knowledge things weren’t as they seemed.

This became the opening paragraph of Demons, which led into me discovering Derick’s life, finding out his purpose, the lie of his creation, and his connection to the things he was made to kill.

As with many of my earlier stories, it wasn’t written to be a series, but as I approached the end, I knew there was more to tell about Derick’s journey
