To answer your question, no it was not a mistake, Angel was stabbed in the stomach, NOT in the heart-that is the only way you kill a vampire

No mistake. A vampire has to be staked in the heart, Angel wasn't staked in the heart. It doesn't have to be wood either, anything to penetrate the heart will do. The show uses wooden stakes but because they're handy I think.
