in my personal opinion (without spoiling anything), i think max and lorelai are two very different people that didn’t have a lot in common. that’s not necessarily a bad thing in all situations, though, and you’ll see how it turns out!

So far, I do like Luke and Lorelai more than Lorelai and Max. They're very cute and Max is super nice but there's just something about Lorelai's chemistry with Luke that I enjoy a bit more. Excited to see if your opinion will change as the season continues. As for Lane and Rory, I totally get it. It's not fair on Rory to not carry on with all the new and exciting things in her life, but it also sucks to be the friend left behind feeling like they don't fit in with their own bestie anymore.

Also, as for the picture of teen-Lorelai in the dress, Emily and Richard are part of old money circles where their daughters still go through something called a "coming out debutante". It used to be, back in the old days, that a debutante means presenting a girl who has "come of age" to men her age (and older) at a ball so that they can mingle and see if a match is there for marriage possibly. It's all for certain families with old money and large inheritances, of course. Now, rich people like Richard and Emily just have their daughters go through it as a tradition. And the reason why Richard and Emily look so upset at the sight of the picture is because Lorelai got pregnant around the time of the debutante ball and presumably missed it because of the fallout. That's why they said she didn't have a debutante.
