2023-09-02 23:02:39 ok now I'm sad I missed this livestream. you finally watched Miss Olivia! idk if our people cleared that up, so I'm explaining the bts shortly: Olivia Rodrigo is a childhood disney protegée (think like Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus, etc). Her latest acting job was "High School Musical: The Musical: The Series" (the first big hit on Disney+, which one an Emmy last year). Now the following stuff was only rumored and never really confirmed, but seems pretty believable: There she met her co-star and on-screen love interest Joshua Bassett (both were 17 and 18 during s1 I believe) and fell in love with him. They had a one-year-relationship until filming the beginning of season 2 on their show (during covid btw). Then they broke up (it's still not crystal clear why, but both of them have written songs about it and it sounds like a lot of teenage angst and miscommunication went on there) and he shortly after started dating Sabrina Carpenter. Olivia then found a label outside of Disney that she felt was a better fit for her music (hence the cursing in her songs) and in cooperation with her great producer Dan Nigro she started working on her first album "Sour". The first single "Driver's License" dropped around the time season 2 of their show aired and EXPLODED. ofc the internet being what it is, quickly made the connection that it must be about Josh. Now people started harassing him and Sabrina, sending them death threats, bullied them in public and online, etc. It was so bad, Josh nearly died from the stress-resulted heart issues (literally, the doc gave him 6 hrs to live) and Sabrina couldn't tour in peace either. Both Josh and Sabrina were then pressured by their label to put out "response tracks" (Sabrina's album "emails I can't send" and Josh's song "Crisis" ). Now, Olivia on the other hand went on a tour, got a bunch of grammies for her album and accompanied music videos and has her second album "Guts" dropping in a week (the single "vampire" from that new album is already another huge success). Now I personally hope all 3 of them have moved on by now and I hate that even though none of the them ever said anything about their relationships and downfall of them publically, some weird "fans" still harassed them this much. As if not all teenagers had those types of break-ups ffs.

oh my god that's horrifying. i was a one direction fan back in the day and there was a lot of drama there with ships and other things but it never felt like there was any kind of danger. people crossed lines sure, but the extent of what you described in your comment is just next level. oh my gosh. i hope they all three are in better places now. it's wild how things are with social media and tiktok now. like back in the day, taylor sang about her breakups and there might have been speculation and people would comment but no one ever took it too far. now with tiktok and social media, people seem to always be wanting someone to attack. it's like they're just on guard constantly waiting for someone to "step out of line" so they can jump on them. there was a really interesting bit of discourse i saw about bullying. there's a trend on tiktok of blasting old bullies on social media and very much destorying their lives from things that happened 10-20 years ago. there seems to be much anger now, and while some of it is justified, how that anger is acted upon is just wild. i look at things that get brought up on tiktok and it's crazy how liking a certain author, disliking a certain author, liking a certain song, disliking a certain song, can get you dog-piled with hate. and i can't even imagine what it must be like for celebrities. olivia has every right to sing about her heartaches. but the person that hurt her heart also has a right to not be harassed. tiktok is bonkers.

You're right, this went really completely out of line. Olivia just wanted to write about teenage heart break and she had success bc it is so relatable. But the harassment here went next level and I think artists nowadays have it way harder and need to reign their fans in a lot more (just remember how each of Taylor Swift's exes got treated online and then ofc she as well). But this happened 3 years ago, they are now all single and successful and moved on I think. But 2020 was wiiiiild. Especially Josh's song "lifeline" really puts in perspective what this shit does to a person mentally and physically.

Gravityfair

I Am Not Chamari

One of the best debut singles in recent memory! Since other folks have covered the drama, I’ll tell you that the song you should check out next is “traitor.”

Lexsi (canyonlwt28)

tons of drama. it was just horrible to watch tbh. i’d be careful talking about it tho haha and the way u talk about all 3 involved. they’re all good ppl and josh and olivia were kids so. all are talented and i fear for you if ur getting into music reactions just bc of the way fandoms are now
