The setup is needed. There’s some really great storylines coming for the rest of the show. You will see more of Oliver. I love Davis as a character. Him and Chloe have great chemistry and that’s the first thing I noticed on my first watch. I love the Lois and Clark dynamic and that we’re starting to see so much more of them together on screen. They’ve built this bind that we saw some more of in season 7, but from here on it’s on another level. Tess is super cool! I can’t wait until you get to know more about her.

I think that Lois and Clark just work in the same area but are not on the same level. Lois is writing her own articles and Clark is writing obituaries and more entry-level pieces. Lois just isn't high enough to have her own office. Some characters like Oliver and Lois have 13-episode contracts, they are considered series regulars and can appear in the credits but don't appear in all episodes.

Like someone else said they are not really in the same position they just in the same location “the basement”. Lois is doing storys with her name in the byline and Clark is doing obituaries. Also from what I understand with the way Superman does the daily planet if Clark’s finds a story and turns it in he might get an article in the paper, not necessarily front page but a byline. Also clark doesn’t care about articles he’s just there to get the news right away so he can help more people
