So, remember in season 1, episode with Barbas, we were exploring their fears, and Prue was afraid of water since their mom drowned, and Prue never even learned to swim because of that. But that's all we knew until now. I think we all assumed that there was probably a demon involved, since she was a witch and also fought demons, like the girls, and died young. So, now we get the full story of how she died. I personally love this episode. It is sweet and sad and emotional. I think on an emotional level, it is totally understandable that the girls might blame Sam for failing to protect and save her. He was Patty's whitelighter, who was supposed to be her guardian, to guide and protect her, and she died on his watch. Is it fair or reasonable to blame him? Of course not. But their reaction isn't rational, it's personal and emotional. Also, I hate Jack. He's very annoying.

Olga already commented this but yeah we found out that their mom died from drowning back in season 1 in the episode with the demon that scared people to death with whatever they feared. Prue was afraid of dying the same way her mom died that's why it almost killed Prue by drowning her in the bath tub if you recall Andy had to go into her bathroom to save her.

So, a whitelighter’s job is to protect their charges—just like how Leo shows up to help them or heals them when they get hurt fighting demons. Sam’s job was to keep their mom safe. And from their perspective he failed at that job. That’s why they blame him. Of course it’s not rational, but it’s their mom. Their reactions are bound to be more emotional, especially considering how young they all were when they lost her. And I’m 100% with you on Jack. I think most people who watched the show hated him lol
