It's called "Gingerbread" because of the monsters being Hansel and Gretel, who broke into the witch's gingerbread house in the famous fairytale. And, yes, the monster influenced the parents when they appeared to be children, but once the monster was revealed to be its true self, the influence was gone. I wouldn't use the word "possessed" because the parents were still very much themselves, but the influence was there. They were sucked into the mob mentality and brainwashed by the "children." I really enjoy this episode and how it still applies to today's world. The book banning, the brainwashing, etc. It's happening everyday. I can even see how parts of this episode relate to the case of Lori Vallow Daybell, who is currently on trial for murdering her children in the name of religion. It's all around us.
