I'm pretty sure their California based, couldn’t tell you exactly where but in the later seasons there will be more clues like certain places that are in California.

I think the closest giveaway that they had was the LAX Airport episode towards the end of Season 1.

They live in the greater Los Angeles area, an unnamed suburban part of it. As with many suburban families, all their work and school is nearby, so we never see them go into LA (except to use the airport etc.). Did you say you were unfamiliar with the term "dude ranch"? It's a ranch that caters to visitors, like this one: people pay to have a carefully managed "ranch experience" -- ride and maybe rope a horse, hike, sit around the campfire after dinner, sleep in a cabin, all that.
