so with daphne, they're wanting us to view what she did from the time period view of things, where there was nothing non-consensual between spouses, and where her action shares equal fault with the duke's deception. it's hard not to view it from our view of our time, and judge her for what she did. i do see her character differently for it. but after seeing this show several times, i know and understand how little she knew of all things sex, and therefore, she would not have understood about consent. i think this reflects a lot in the discussion she has with her mother and how morified and angry she feels from being so unprepared for sex and marriage. in this time, women were kept completely in the dark. men would often go to brothles and have sex with prosititutes instead of their own wives aside from the intent to bear a child, because "ladies" were to be kept "as pure as possible." i love violet as a mother but she is a product of her time and kept her daughters in the dark as well. i get so angry with daphne for what she did but my heart also goes out to her. she was practically a child, thrust out into this world. in this time, women were taught sewing and languages like french and latin; they were taught to play intrusments and read poetry but they were not taught about their own anatomy and about what sex would entail. if we really want to get into the nitty gritty of it all, was any sexual act on a wedding night consensual? if they did not know what was to happen? i think there's pain and anger that's justified between both the duke and daphne. in the end, the duke told her that if she was pregnant, he'd stand by her as husband and wife. if she's not pregnant, they would be married by title only and he'll want nothing to do with her. when she got her period that night, she broke down in tears because that signifies the end of her marriage and in her mind, the duke's love for her. i love the duke's performance in that scene. he says absolutely nothing but everything is conveyed in his eyes. he doesn't want this to be the end of their marriage either. he doesn't want to lose her either. he wants the happily ever after with her, but he feels he cannot have that. it's such an intense scene. with marina, she truly feels like she has no options. she could not go to the boarding house/home for unwed mothers because it was too expensive. her options were to settle and marry a very old man she did not know, a man who could possibly mistreat her or her child, or marry collin. her plan with collin backfired immensley and she was left feeling trapped and cornered with no way out. my heart breaks for women of this time and how limited their options were.

i agree that daphne is problematic and is my least favorite bridgerton, but I hope you stick with it till season 2 because I swear it becomes such a better show when you care about the lead way more. plus all the side characters we love continue to grow and have side stories. daphne is less involved later and also somehow more likable. I can't wait till season 3 comes out on netflix

if it weren't for side stories i'd tell you to skip to season 2 😅
