The reason they tried to take the cattle and keep it on the reservation is because the Dutton Land is Indian land. Most land is Indian land and that's much of the fight at the core of this part of the show is that those who live on the reservation are getting tired of bending to the will of the Dutton's and of their idea of "peace". The Dutton's hold over their land is because they inherited the land in the family so they'll die or kill before loosing it or the cattle on it. But the land is truly native land and people like Casey's brother in law liked the new chief because he is aggressive in taking that land from the Dutton's. I wouldn't say he is a bad man, he is just as intense about taking the land from John Dutton as John Dutton is about keeping it. Which is fair.

Don’t worry about not understand the terminology. I couldn’t follow it either I think most of that was just ambiance anyway. None of the people you met are all good or all bad. You can tell each of them have their point of view. I think the accident at the beginning was just construction equipment in the road which caused the accident because he wasn’t expecting it. It’s explained that the Dutton land borders the national park on one side and the reservation on the other.

The beginning was just a really bad accident that I kinda see as John literally colliding with “progress” because it was a Paradise Valley truck that was involved in the accident. Paradise Valley is the new luxury development.
