The beginning of this episode reminded me that Peyton and Lucas have chemistry, but then the proposal scene reminded me of the things I find so irritating about them, especially Lucas. He decided to propose when they were only 19 and both just starting to follow their dreams, then he got so whiny about it when she didn't immediately say yes. Also, technically she did say yes, she said she wanted to marry him in the future, just not right now and instead of looking at that fact, he decided to say since it's not now, I'll just leave while your sleeping and say you broke up with me, apparently. Also, I don't want Lucas with Brooke, I want him to stay far away from her, relationship wise, so he doesn't just hurt her again and ruin her storylines.

I was always so annoyed that Lucas gave Peyton an ultimatum. Watching it back this time, I'm still annoyed, but seeing it a little differently. I used to see it as him being controlling even if he wasn't aware of that himself. Now I think he did love her but wanted to break up deep down. The proposal was a last ditch effort to hold on to her because they were drifting apart vs a grand romantic gesture of wanting to be with her forever. If it was a true proposal for the right reasons he could have waited a year like she asked. Since it was just to avoid a breakup, it didn't work. Yet, there was still love. Overall though, Lucas really annoys me. He tends to just get mad or sad whenever he doesn't get his way.

Rebeccaf87

Exatly. Peyton didn't actually say no, just not right now. They could have potentially even negotiated her saying yes but with an extra long engagement until they were ready for the actual marriage. Instead he didn't get his way and broke up with her. Though now I do see another angle which I posted about.

I don’t think this episode was supposed to make us want Peyton and Lucas back together, it was more of an explanation episode why they broke up. I just honestly can’t with Lucas. He’s constantly flip-flopping between women but calling them the one immediately. Peyton brought up solid reasons why this proposal was not a good idea and that she’s saying let’s do this when we’re both ready for it but he was doing it out of insecurity bc they barely saw each other. Him breaking up with her just bc she didn’t wanna get married at 19(!) was nuts. This season really made me dislike Lucas a lot, just bc in contrast to all the other characters he hasn’t matured at all.

I get your pov but even still he puts the blame of their break-up on Peyton for saying no insted of him not wanting to deal with long distance anymore. He was acting super immature.

Rebeccaf87

Oh absolutely. I don't want to absolve him of anything, he's annoying and being immature.

Oh and yes I love Brooke’s story this season and I don’t want her getting dragged into the Lucas drama again. Luckily the show thought the same as evidenced by this episode where she turned him down thankfully.

Rebeccaf87

Same here. So glad she turned him down though a little sad seeing her throw herself fully back into her work because she already felt lonely.

I get what you’re saying though. Subconsciously he thought longh distance is not working anymore, so throw a hail mary ultimatum so that he can have a reason to end the relationship.

And this, THIS is why I'm Team Peyton in their breakup. Luke was trying to pressure her into saying yes and when she said she wasn't ready he made the decision to end their relationship for the both of them. He was a big selfish baby. And then he acts butt hurt when she did nothing wrong. I don't think Leyton is endgame cuz they're just toxic at this point. He's too fickle. I wish Peyton had ended up with Jake.

You make some good points about why Lucas proposed that I didn't consider before, but they make sense. But still Lucas was being so annoying in this episode and very unfair to Peyton, especially saying that she broke up with him, when he was the one who left.

This episode wasn’t meant to convince you Lucas and Peyton should be together lol because it certainly doesn’t do that. It’s an explanation of why they aren’t together now.

This episode made me glad they skipped over the college years, honestly. It's an okay episode, but watching Luke whine about Peyton and watch him go through editing the book etc. and the countless flashbacks of peyton and him after the breakup while he did... Ugh, it would have been EXHAUSTING.

I'm not upset with Lucas saying he's in a place in life where he's ready to get married and have a family and he wants to be with someone who's in the same place as he is. If that's his deal breaker lots of people do break up cuz their partner is in a different stage of life. Peyton didn't do anything wrong either in the breakup, but they broke up and in the meantime he found Lindsey who is closer to that in the process of starting her career already. I don't think he's wrong for that but he didn't communicate that well. I don't like how Peyton treats Lindsey in this time period though.
