bless!! thank you for doing my episode request for this :) it's one of my comfort shows. i've seen it multiple times over but recently watched season 1 again and goodness seeing the characters again felt like seeing old friends. season 1 just had such a special feel to it and i remember being so hooked into this show from the very first episode. maybe it'll be one you could consider to do in full sometime. gonna go fix some hot tea and snuggle in to watch along. so excited for this episode!

okay, now i can make my comments lol meredith is a weirdo, and that's a fact she proudly proclaims. she calls herself "dark and twisty" and can be quite immature. she's smart as hell and good at what she does but yeah, they're all essentially babies this first season. one of the main things i love about grey's is watching the growth and character development. there's characters in season 1 that you watch grow and develop and change and get better and you root for them the entire time and find yourself encouraging them along the way, but they do start out kind of at square one. the thing the show does well this season is show that everyone has their own shit. meredith is the main character so this first episode showed her issues stemming from her mother. she wants to be seen as standing on her own without her mother's legacy following her. she alludes to her mother being away but still being alive. she is dealing with things with her mother entirely on her own while juggling medical school and now an internship. as the show carries on, it's revealed each intern has their crap they're dealing with and kind of has that lesson of not just judging someone based on first apperances/impressions. the thing i love about the show is just how human the characters are. i think meredith is a very realistic character. she's flawed and can be annoying but honestly that's why i like her and root for her to grow and be better. i loved her and christina's chat on the chairs after the surgery. they didn't need to have some big emotional moment. they could just acknowledge what was said and done and move forward. in the ending idk if you caught it but they're all heading out of the hospital together at the end of their loooong day and meredith is kinda lagging behind while everyone else is walking together and talking. she's kind of in the background watching them and smiling with them, but not making the step to join them fully and still kind of holding herself back. that's a little moment that would be important to note if you ever do watch episode 2 or just continue on with the series in general. they all start out being essentially still just kids thrown into this. they're so young and they have so much to learn. their journey is what makes the show so special. thank you for doing this episode :)

So Gray's Anatomy is a reference to the medical textbook used in med school of the same name. The book was written in 1858 by Henry Gray. My mom is a doctor and she had this book on our bookshelf growing up.

Also just to clarify, Surgical interns do get paid. It's a paid internship.

I think you're gonna love this show - excellent replacement for House. I used to love that show. Most people are afraid to watch it bc it has 19 seasons, meaning it's suuuuper long. But like the first 10 seasons were actually amazing and back then such a diverse cast, especially in a medical show was unheard of. It is a success story for a reason. And yes many shows still try to be the new "Grey's Anatomy". As for the characters, people evolve and grow on you. I agree Meredith was never my fave either but she gets way more interesting over time, heck even over the first season. Same with Derek and Alex. I agree all the characters didn't get enough time yet. But they get lots of layers over time.

Oh interesting, so I just have missed her describing herself that way but it makes sense. She did seem more closed off than the others

GeekedOutNation

Yea I was originally going to replace House with this before I started this season because the views were so low for House but people said I need to finish it. So the plan is Still to do this after House

See, even just watching this pilot brought back so many INCREDIBLE storylines in the coming seasons. Unfortunately, they had 10 SPECTACULAR seasons and then it just kept going downhill. At least to me. I stoppped watching a long time ago, probably season 11 or 12, cuz it was just too unbearable. I kept up with a few spoilers and they've managed to ruin a fair bit of character growth to the point of complete erasure so I'm glad I stopped when I did. At best, if you react to this, you'll have 10 seasons of wonderful TV and 9 seasons of mediocre TV 🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️ just my opinion though. Maybe there are a lot of people who love the new seasons...i did stop watching after all. Maybe they had a turn around

I agree but 10 amazing seasons is still a huge feat. And when Grey’s Anatomy really wants to, it van be beyond epic great.

True. It's incredible...and I'd so totally watch the reactions up to season 10...but when things go bad after that, it's like why bother. Don't know if Steven would even want to continue with it once he clocks on to the frankly weird destruction of characters at a certain point after that cuz 9 seasons of mediocrity is a long commitment. But that's literally YEARS down the line lol so 🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️

I think this would be so far down the line that it really doesn’t matter. Plus, he stuck through the horror ahow that is glee season 5 so anything is possible 😂

as a future medical student, i feel qualified to explain the levels: there are diff types of residency programs for different paths to be diff types of doctors. these residency programs happen after the 4 years of medical school, which is after the 4 years of college (so right now, they are around 27 years old). because they want to be surgeons, they are doing a surgical residency program (7 years). The first year of the residency is their intern year (intern = first year resident). Bailey (the nazi) is a higher year resident. After the 7 years, many do fellowships to further specialize in their surgical area. They can also not do that. At this point (after being residents), doctors are now attendings (like Derek and Burke). Interns/residents are paid; they are just paid horrible wages (like 60k) for their 80+ hour weeks (residency is known to be the worst part because the stressful 80 hours/week is normal). When doctors reach attending status is when they earn the big doctor money. hopefully this clears some things.
