Yes, Valley Girls was a backdoor pilot. It was very close to getting picked up, but the CW instead went with The Vampire Diaries, Melrose Place (reboot; lasted 18 episodes), and The Beautiful Life (show with Mischa Barton; canceled after 4 episodes). It sucks that VG wasn't given a chance. Sources say that doing the backdoor pilot instead of creating an actual pilot for executives to watch may have been the nail in the coffin. They didn't understand what the show could be without the GG elements. 😐 I enjoyed it but it was confusing that the only van der Woodsen in it was Serena's uncle, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿... and that Rufus wasn't in it. It made it a little hard to piece together what the series was going to focus on. All that being said, the casting is amazing. Brittany Snow (who at this time was trying to get away from TV), Andrew McCarthy (a member of the 80s Brat Pack), Cynthia Watros (young CeCe, who at this time was only known for Lost and Guiding Light, but has been amazing in everything I've seen her in), Krystin Ritter, Matt Barr (Pyscho Derek), and Shiloh Fernandez? What's not to love. As for not having a build-up to prom... these are UES kids, they have parties like this every week... prom isn't so incredible to them like it is to others.
