Something very similar in my school with a girl the same age. Pretending that kids aren't out there having sex just because you're uncomfortable talking about it with them doesn't help anyone. These are the conversations that need to be had.

mr. feeny's line about "a young girl's reputation" gave me goosebumps. i'll never forget in high school i had a teacher who cared that much. it still means so much to me all these years later. again, i can see both where mr. feeny and mr. turner were coming from. ironically i don't think this episode could be shown today. people freaked out in seeing red about a pre-teen girl drawing fan art of a shirtless boy. can you imagine what they'd say regarding this episode? but i think it does brooch an important conversation. like it or not, middle schoolers and high schoolers get into these situations and there needs to be open conversation. i'll never forget there was a girl i knew who had two babies and was pregnant with her third by seventh grade. no teacher, no administrator batted an eye. idk what her situation was personally but it breaks my heart to think about. this age group needs to hear these conversations and i think this was such an important episode and is why i love this show so much. it speaks of real things in such a way that isn't condescending. it doesn't shy away from the conversation or try to scare kids. it doesn't talk down to them. instead it presents things in such an open and honest way with such care to what their message is and for their audience as well. it's just an incredible show.

this episode stuck with me so much cause i watched it in middle school and it was weird to even think about cory and topanga talking about sex so young. But then i realized, in middle school people WERE talking about sex and 'having sex' (hard to know if they were being honest though).

they most certainly were :( in my above comment i mention a girl i knew who had two babies and pregnant with her third by seventh grade. she put their baby pictures in the cover of her binder. my partner in home ec in 8th grade also got pregnant that year and it was the first time someone i was close with who was my own age was pregnant and it was so jarring for me. we didn't even have a talk or discussion on sex ed at all. in 5th grade we watched a film on puberty with no mention of sex what so ever. in fact, outside of what my parents told me, this episode was the most i'd ever heard regarding it at the time. it's so unfortunate and it's why i side with mr. turner in this regard. there should be an open discussion instead of it being kept hidden away, just so kids can be educated on how to be safe.
