I don’t like this episode as a series finale as much as I liked The Gift (which was written as a series finale if they didn’t get picked up by another network). But I still find it pretty satisfying. They closed the Hellmouth once and for all and all the potentials got slayer powers. Good stuff

Second_Strike

I actually really like Anya's death because it's kinda realistic. Not every character is gonna have that big hero moment like Spike. Think about the fact that all of the girls were full on slayers at the end there, and their deaths were just as unceremonious as Anya's. She is probably the weakest physical fighter present for the last fight, with the exception of Andrew. Andrew had basically accepted the fact that he was going to die. He should die. Dying to end his arc would just allow him to continue his fantasy of being the tragic former villain who finally achieves redemption with a heroic death in the final battle. Surviving forces him to accept that will never be the case. The ending of Anya's arc meanwhile was all about learning who she was as a human and how to live as a human, and in the end, rather than living, she died the most realistic human death.

Felt like a pretty satisfying ending to me, tbh. Buffy's no longer the only "chosen one" so the point of the closing dialogue was, she gets a chance to have a life now, which is a pretty perfect ending for her to me considering from episode 1 onward, that was her one true desire. They permanently closed the Hellmouth, awakened Slayers all over the world, resolved the Buffy/Spike thing in a way I didn't hate...not sure I could've asked for a better conclusion, tbh. And whenever you have these big battles, there's always gonna be deaths don't involve a blaze of glory or big hero moment or anything like that. Anya's a former vengeance demon who came into this show with nothing but resentment for humans, and she went out fighting for humanity. That's an appropriate-enough ending for her arc to me.

It doesn't feel like a ending because it's the beginning of buffys real life..where she's not the only chosen one

Also josh Whedon said that he couldn't kill off one of the core 4 without it still being classed as a victory. And anyas death was to show that there are senseless deaths in war. I agree that xander didn't grieve enough. But yes as I said before it's not ment to be a ending it's the beginning of buffys life hence the beginning of her smile as the end shot. I loved this ending aside for xander not grieving. Spikes arc and death still brings tears to my eyes every time. Rip spike

It is meant to be an open ending, the start of a new chapter - one we won't see. We just get to know they are out there starting a new world finding the slayers, and that Buffy is free to choose what she wants to do. I think given the context of future hope, it was hard to put Xander grieving within that ending. It would have been equally weird having him in the back breaking down crying, while the team looks forward and music shows us the open ending of an optimistic future. They kind of had to pick one, and didn't have time to explicitly show Xander grieving.

"It doesn't feel like an ending..." because it isn't. It's the beginning of something new. A whole new path has been opened up for all of them, but especially for Buffy. Anya's death breaks me every single time. She was one of the best characters in my opinion and deserved so much more. 😭 But I disagree about Xander's grief. He's a private person. Consider his home life, which we had only hints of for so long. He will grieve alone. Making jokes is his way of getting through the day. He's the group's Chandler. I started watching your YouTube channel because of Buffy, and then became a Patron because of Gilmore Girls, both of which have now ended, and it's a very strange feeling. But I'm glad I got to watch you on this journey, and I'm looking forward to continuing the others and starting new ones. There are still so many great shows to discover.

Spike sacrificing himself for the greater good...beeing Buffys hero...and ours...is just perfect ❤🥺

just a friendly reminder to NOT watch the opening credits for angel 5x01.

I think this ending is the probably the best one they could have for Buffy specifically. You seem kind of mad that she didn't die...why would you want that? She's died a whole lot. She can finally kind of put down the mantle of being the chosen one and while Sunnydale is gone, the future is full of hope and promise and that is a happy ending. I feel like you are mostly mad about Anya's death and that's fair, she seemed to be one of your favorites. I was always fine with Anya's death because the actress asked to be killed off and it was blunt and realistic like she was. And it really ties in to what she was saying in the last episode about humans and death and their surprise when it comes. She really came full circle from the vengeance demon she started the show as. The timing of it was also hard to mourn her properly. Reminds me of Natasha's death in endgame. It was so sudden and sad but in a large battle often times there is no time to dwell on it. It doesn't mean that no one is gonna to mourn her once the dust has settled. Or that Xander who uses humor to cope with most things happy or sad isn't affected by her dying. I think you will come to like this ending better as time passes. It's one of the better series finales out there.

Yeah, and I never really took what he said as necessarily a joke anyway. It's been shown over and over that Xander deals with hard situations with sarcasm. To me it felt like he was hurting a lot...you can see it in his face. But he also felt something bittersweet too. Andrew told him Anya sacrificed herself saving him. Xander was in awe a bit. She was a demon that never cared for humans and then her journey was that she fell in love with them. She found reason to stand side by side with them. In the end, she even gave her life to try to protect them. She found beauty in humanity and died trying to save it. That's her arc. That's why Joss killed her. Xander isn't NOT upset...he just understands this too and that's what his comment to Andrew is about.

Overall, I loved the ending. Each character ended their journey perfectly. It feels like an ending...just a hopeful and happy one. You're supposed to understand that the character's all will go on and most of them found some sort of peace and happiness. Regardless, they completed their character arcs that were occurring throughout the show. Buffy: Strives for a normal life and feels alone throughout the series. In the end, she gets it. She's no longer the only slayer, so she's no longer alone. Saving the world isn't just up to her now. She can have a normal life. She gets rewarded for all the years of angst and hard work and dying. Instead, now...she gets to live. It's the opposite of the season 5 finale. She doesn't die in darkness to protect the world, sacrificing herself. Instead, she's standing in the light, smiling because she saved it and now has a future. Spike: Started out as the villain and pretty much selfish. The chip stopped him from being the villain, but the soul made him care. He was no longer selfish. He gave his life to save the world, becoming the hero of the story rather than the villain he always thought he was. He always wanted to "be a better man." He always went on that he couldn't be the man Buffy wanted or deserved. In the end, he was. Willow: Her story was all about magic and control. Her magic grew and she wrapped so much of her personality and self esteem up into it. When she lost her magic, she felt like the Willow from season one...and her self esteem went down. Yet, she was terrified of tapping into that dark magic again. In the end, she found out that she could tap into the light, good magic too. This means she can be that super powerful Willow again, but good too. She found the balance. That's why her hair turned light by the way. Xander: Was always the human on the sidelines. He had no powers or anything. He's sort of like Matt in The Vampire Diaries. The token human. But by the end he'd found his place...standing with all of them even without any sort of powers and he'd accepted that finally. Dawn: She was the protected one. Always the one to be shielded and saved. By the end, even though Buffy worried, she was there fighting with them. She was growing up and Buffy was letting her. Faith: She'd been selfish and erratic. But here she was, being selfless. She let Buffy lead and call the shots even though Faith had always been secretly jealous of Buffy. Faith always wanted to be the leader and respected like Buffy is. Here, she defers to Buffy and is sad when she see's Buffy fall. The two slayers finally learn to work together rather than fight each other. Giles: Gets everything he's wanted. The apocalypse is adverted and his slayer, Buffy, is actually alive. His biggest fear was her dying throughout the series. Now, she has help as the slayer and can live a normal life. Anya: (I said this in a comment above) She was a demon that never cared for humans and then her journey was that she fell in love with them. She found reason to stand side by side with them. In the end, she even gave her life to try to protect them. She found beauty in humanity and died trying to save it. That's her arc. She completed it. She was always scared of death as a human. When the season 3 apocalypse happened she ran. When Joyce died, she couldn't understand death. In the end, Anya died that human death that she was always worried about, but did it standing up for humanity.

Buffy's final scene with Spike always gets me teary-eyed
