i've never actually seen people give their kids passed down gifts. I've only seen it in movies. I guess it's just to keep the item alive and have something all generations had in the family. Especially after a parent dies. So if Alan's dad died and he had given him the necklace, then it would make more sense to me like with Eric's knife. But one day, Alan will pass away so Cory can have it as a memorabilia.Like in some movies, moms give their daughters a special necklace or ring that their moms gave them.

I think its a tangible way for future generations to remember the past, especially people that are no longer with us. I know that when my grandma passes I will get some of the rings she wore her whole life. That I admired and played with when I spent time with her. I thought this episode was very sweet, I wish that the silver gloves were actually given to Cory at a later date like Cory wanted but this show is not the best at continuity lol.
