Mmm, love this episode.

Idk how you managed it but somehow knowing the twist you ended getting tricked more. Anyway yeah if you rewatch the season you can see all the ways Michael was making things worse for them... it's most obvious with Chidi I think, where Michael was constantly putting him in positions to make decisions, which of course gives him panic attacks/stomach ache. Letting Tahani see the rankings in the neighborhood so she feels inferior. Honestly Jason is the one I rarely notice Michael actively mess with.

One of the all-time great episodes of TV. I recall that after I first saw it, I was having the same sorts of reactions that you are now. I can't wait for you to get to season 2!

The funny part is that Eleanor kind of figured it out in the first episode. She told Chidi that her parents were probably being used to torture each other. It's funny watching this when you know the twist because you catch all the hints that Michael was evil that you dismissed the first time around. For example,, he straight up tortures Chidi with having to make decisions in Episode 10. Seems totally innocent like they're helping Eleanor, but he's spends the entire episode forcing Chidi to decide between 2 things, like pen or marker. And fake Eleanor (Vicki) is the first to suggest that Eleanor likes Chidi, which leads to Eleanor confessing her feelings which tortures Chidi and Tahani. Michael also asks Eleanor to be his assistant in investigating herself basically, which tortures her because she has to act good while around him. Jason's whole identity in the Good Place tortures him because he hates not being himself which he expresses when he has to pretend to be Acid Cat. There's so much foreshadowing that you don't pick up on the first time around.

I'm SO, SO glad that you weren't spoiled about Michael's true nature cuz the indignation you had when you found out was HILARIOUS. Can't wait for season 2!

I think it's cuz Jason just didn't get most things so Michael couldn't really figure out a way to mess with him without confusing Jason and him missing the point completely 🤣🤣🤣 am I the only one who loves how dumb he is?

Primus

Nope love how dumb Jason is as well. And how loveable he is...

Like you, the episode stressing "motivation" as important made me wonder about Tahani, as her earthly motivations clearly hadn't been pure philanthropy. I wondered how she'd made it to the good place, but I told myself "these writers are smart enough to realize this, they'll explain it eventually," and then the next week I forgot about it. I think the only direct clue was in this episode, when Michael (in the 2nd flashback) got his new idea for a neighborhood and labeled his new blueprint "The Good Place" in quotation marks -- indicating that this neighborhood was going to be only an imitation of the good place. But who's going to deduce all that from two tiny punctuation marks?
