This Lois is pretty similar to many interpretations, only usually she is a combination of this version plus Chloe (getting to the bottom of a story, getting herself into trouble). And remember this show still has 6 more seasons, plenty of time to develop Lois further. I Love the Lois and Clark relationship throughout all media. Lois is great because she is smart and tough and brave but often incredibly jaded by the world and Superman helps her to believe that good things are possible. She is also a hero in her own right, using her words to change the world.

I agree, I think the writers of Superman did a lot of work to make sure Lois is a worthy and equal partner to Superman, not just a consort.

Lois is definitely not a goodie goodie type of character from what I’ve seen if her. I’m not expert but I believe she is almost always a pushy, nosy, overbearing, investigative reporter. She’s not just there to be a love interest and damsel type.

I’ve been waiting for the reaction to this episode! So much stuff happens! I remember being so shocked when Alicia not only dies, but they show her hanging there. And now Chloe knows about Clark which is so exciting! Thank you for giving context of your previous ideas of what Lois might be like, it’s really helpful in understanding your reaction. Lois has gone through a few incarnations over the decades, but she has always been depicted as a gusty, headline-chasing, award winning reporter. Supposedly Lois’s creator was inspired by the real life reporter Nellie Bly. In the 80’s Lois was updated to be more a more modern woman. She’s an army brat with a tough upbringing and is capable fighter. To quote wikipedia “In this modern version of events, Lois was portrayed as a tough-as-nails reporter who rarely needed rescuing. She was depicted as strong, opinionated, yet sensitive.” I think the version of Lois in Smallville is a very immature version of Lois. She’s gutsy for sure but, as you saw, is prone to putting her foot in mouth. She’s unpolished and doesn’t think things through as throughly as a fully fledged Lois Lane might, because she’s lacking the experience and needs to grow.

Some comments about Lois: Its expected that you don't see her as a love interest. She is more of a thorn in Clark's side than somebody who you instantly see a connection and a potential relationships. For all intents and purposes, Lana is still the main female lead next to Clark. All I will say is that both Clark and Lois do a lot of growing up from this point onwards. This episode is one of my favorites because this is one of the first times we see our allies being hurt in a permanent way. I don't really count Whitney and out of our main cast of characters, none of them have been written out of the show in such a dramatic fashion. We lost Pete but that was just him leaving town. Alicia's death is impactful on not only Clark's character but adds to his turmoil about his secret and the weight he feels from protecting it. I also feel like Lois's remark to Chloe at the end is a really strong line from her and adds to what we know her character to be. Overall, the show is starting something that I can't get much into because of spoilers but don't be surprised if you start seeing more shocking episodes, especially in season 5.

Such a great fucking episode. Alicia's hit to alot of smallville fans cuz of the similarities with clark and the manner of injustice in which she died. Again the writing of this show is soo good. Godfather of TV DC in merit. Some also say this episode was the beginning of a tonal shift of Smallville as well. Oh btw i always SMH and bust out laughing when Steven shits on Lois, like chill bud lol. Lois as a character was always this loud mouth, take no shit, obnoxious , army brat. I totally get you dont know her but i believe in time she'll grow on you Guaranteed

I like Lois, I think she's a pretty accurate portrayal to most versions of her, I'm also glad Chloe knows, I've never loved secrets, so I'm always glad when someone finds out. Also, I really liked Alicia so I'm really sad about what happened.

And so it begins one of my favourite stretches of the show. The last part of season 4. You will really love how the relationship between Clark and Chloe grows in these remaining episodes of season 4. I know I do.

Yep, Lois is absolutely like this in most incarnations. She's pushy, tenacious, hard-headed, an army brat who can generally handle herself in scary situations but still often gets in over her head, and is like a force of nature in Clark's eyes. She's basically the exact opposite of Clark in some ways, but in the ways that truly matter to him - conviction, compassion, courage, drive, the need to pursue justice and help others - they are the same. I think in comics and other media, Clark's drawn to her because of those similarities, but ALSO because she's so unlike most people he's known before. She will speak her mind even when she probably shouldn't, no matter how unpopular whatever she's gonna say will be, but underneath that tough exterior and the rough edges, she's a really, really good person who will fight for what's right, no matter the cost. I think from a writing standpoint, in telling the story of an alien who's fallen in love with his adopted planet - Clark's love for Lois is meant to parallel his love for humanity: we can be messy, volatile, and stubborn and many worse things on a regular basis, but underneath it all there's SUCH capacity for kindness, compassion, heroism and love, and THAT's what he sees when he sees us (and her). And she challenges him and makes him better every day, just as we do. Superman is meant to be our bright mirror: Despite our (many) flaws, he sees the best in us and reflects it back. And Lois's role in the Superman mythos is more than just to be a "love interest," but also to be an avatar for that notion, imo. If she was just a goody-goody or "Mary Sue," she wouldn't be able to serve that role very effectively or honestly.

It’s absolutely ridiculous that Chloe would say beside Alicia who has motivate to hurt Lana!?!?! Really?!? She has been attacked constantly from Season 1-4 by random people!!!!

oh lord Steven is complaining about Lois again hahaha

Yay Alicia’s back for a second episode! I love how they differentiated her character besides anyone else. I’ve said in the past that she is my favorite love interest for Clark, besides Lana. But as an adult now watching this, I still love the eps but I see a lot of things I didn’t see when I was a teen. I always liked Alicia because Clark never smiled at anytime like the way he smiled when he was around her. He looked really happy when he was with her, but I realize now It was because the character of Alicia was a narcissist. Narcissist do what they call “love bombing,” they overwhelm a sensitive moral person with compliments and love to get them to…ultimately do what THEY want. I always thought Alicia really loved Clark, but love does not demand it’s own way. And that’s something Alicia kept doing with the marriage and then now this. If she truly loved Clark, then she would have respected his decision to not tell anyone about his secret. Instead, she thought SHE knew better, and demanded her own way. That’s not love, that’s selfishness. Now we can go on to say it “yeah but it was because of the green kryotonite that made her this way.” And I agree with you, I realize truly and fully that EVERYBODY, it doesn’t matter who you are, in Superman lore, if you get infected by green kryptonite you will turn immoral deep down. In a way I actually don’t blame them, it screws with your mind. I mean look at Lex, he was a sweet kid before he got infected and lost his hair, HE TRIES to act moral afterwards, that’s why he likes Clark so much… but ultimately he succumbs like everyone else. I don’t think we’ve ever seen anyone get infected with green kryptonite and they remain a good person (maybe one character who was the hermit, but in order for him to remain that way he had to distance himself from everyone) and in a way, them turning evil and doing criminal things is kinda Clarks fault- no wonder he doesn’t want to punish and kill them when he catches them. They’re evil cause of him in a way :( sad

This is the most beautiful description of Clark & Lois I've ever seen! Thank you for putting my love for Clark & Lois into words so eloquently!

Fun fact about Lois and her date: Shortly before season 4 began, Erica Durance did a guest stint on Stargate SG-1's eight season (episode 7, Affinity) where she played a love interest for Teal'c and who had an abusive boyfriend. Said boyfriend was the exact same actor (Derek Hamilton).

At this point in time DC was super protective of their IP and really controlled quite a few things storewide/plot-wise on Smallville. They had final say on a lot of stuff that went on, on the show. One of these things being the Lois and Clark relationship. Right now it's a super slow burn of a relationship as TBTB (DC) wanted to follow cannon was much as possible and in canon supposedly the hadn't met yet, and Lana was his HS girlfriend, so they wanted to stick to that as much as possible. So the fact that you don't seem them now as a couple makes total sense. (A lot has changed since Arrowverse was created and they (DC) became a lot more lenient on what is canon and their IP). Having said that I really appreciate they was they both really grow (up) and grow towards each other. Their relationship on Smallville is handled beautifully, and their incarnation of Lois is closer to canon, compared to any of the recent films that have Lois as some weak simpering damsel in distress. Lois is brash, bossy and can completely hold her own. Erica IMO is the best version of Lois that exists.

Yep alot of banger episodes to come. And one in mind that I CANNOT WAIT FOR STEVEN TO WATCH. Y'all know what im talkin about

Trevon

Lana has been attacked by random kryptofreaks Since the show started. It’s not hard to believe someone order than Alicia is responsible for attacking Lana in this episode

Primus

Oh yeah. I'm counting the days. There are a couple for me. One is my personal favourites but I am not sure if Steven will like it. I will give you guys a hint I'm sure you will know which one. The hint is memory! Love that one.

john segun doe

Yah but Alicia is def suspect number 1 cuz these attacks randomly started happening a little after she came. Also it happened the night that clark and her were seen in the talon, so it totally makes sense for them to jump straight to alicia given that they also thinks she straight bat shit crazy

Just a side note - I had completely forgotten that the last song of the episode was "Deeper Water" by the lovely talented Minnie Driver.
