Fly on the Wall

The Silas doppelganger stuff gets a lot more interesting. Trust me. Perhaps you still won't like it, but there's still a lot more to unpack with it. I hope you saw the order where they sometimes do two of one and two of the other.

I don’t get why Damon is talking about having a long distance relationship when he is a vampire and can literally go visit her whenever he wants

Fly on the Wall

Right? He acts like he can't get way because responsibilities or something. Unless Elena doesn't want him to leave Jeremy and then that makes sense.

i think this is one of the weakest seasons of the show and one big reason why is because of the silas storyline. i don't blame you for being bored with it. i'm just patiently waiting for you to get through season 5 so you can start season 6, which is WAYYY better imo.

Fly on the Wall

Sidestepping the minority stuff because I'm gonna leave that on the previous episode's comment section (though side characters of every race die in this show), I think the purpose of killing Bonnie's dad was to show her powerlessness of being on the other side. And I feel the show needed to reinforce his threat for this season. His previous plan was thwarted and he had been kind of hiding out for the past three months and so far his only goal was to do something with Katherine so viewers who don't care about her safety might have softened up on viewing him as a threat. Th last thing I feel it did was show us how powerful he hadn't gotten. He just convinced an entire town square to do absolutely nothing about the death of their mayor. This man is so much more than a vampire. He's a very real problem. And we'll now see more of what he can now that's sicked all these people on Katherine. So dangerous.

Fly on the Wall

I personally love the Silas storyline, but I get why you want to see season 6. I do think Steven might like this season as he’s into a lot of what’s going on right now.

All I could say in reply about your comments at the end of the episode was, "You're right you're right you're sooooo right." So sad really. There was absolutely no reason to kill the mayor. Only to isolate Bonnie even more??? To give her something to overcome? Like being dead and practically alone on the other side isn't enough motivation to come back?? It was a weak plot device to bolster other characters. Silas could've killed anyone, the mayor didn't even need to be in this episode. His sole purpose for this episode, after a long disappearance from last season, was to die. (Don't even get me started on the lack of parental figures and guidance other than Liz, a white woman, mind you. No hate to her obviously, but C'mon) If they wanted to make Silas threatening, because apparently their writing before wasn't good enough to scare the watcher's into believing it, He could have killed half the crowd like you suggested. Even being inclusive with killing the mayor and other people would've been better. But once again, in this show, it is blantantly obvious who the "dead weight or expendable people" are. Love the reaction! Can't wait for more, but it does suck, I agree with you, how... should I say, frivilous the writer's are with killing minority characters on this show. That's my opinion on that, of course I respect others, but it has gotten unbearable.

the more im rewatching this with you the more im seeing how dirty this show does bonnie. holy crap dude lmao

Terri

No one that isn't a main character is safe. Period. Also...think about how many of the other parents they've killed. Think about it. You should have expected Bonnie's Dad to die as soon as he was introduced. That's the thing...they are equal opportunity about it.

S

I was waiting for your reaction to Bonnie’s dad being killed lmao… it sucks :/ it’s like every minority character has a ticking time clock on them. It would’ve been cool to keep the roommate in the show too. I’d love a new member in the friend group. So much wasted writing potential. I’m not sure how I feel about this season in general honestly but it’ll be fun to see the reactions. Oh and the Jeremy cover story is so funny! Who would believe he faked his death.

Rida

Yea I always thought the killing Bonnie's dad thing was more about the kill all parental figures trope in supernatural teen fiction. It's the only way you can at least somewhat believably have the character's doing things that to a decent parent would seem insane and seriously concerning. The only reason Caroline's mom is still alive is cause she's kind of part of it, knows everything, and isn't trying to control anything. Everyone else's parents/parental figures are dead or deadbeats.

Fly on the Wall

*MILD UNINTENTIONAL SPOILERS POTENTIALLY* DO NOT READ THIS OR THE REPLY TO THIS! I’m only gonna say to this to you because you were reasonable on the other comment section, but yeah, it was dirty, but think about this, too, Elena’s adopted mom and dad, Elena’s biological mom, Elena’s biological dad, Elena’s aunt lol, Elena’s brother (though Bonnie resurrected him later). My goodness the woman couldn’t lose family fast enough. TVD has a serious parent/child grieving kink. And that’s just Elena. Then you got Tyler, who lost his dad in season 1 and his mom in season 4. Caroline lost her dad in season 3 and you gotta think Liv’s on borrowed time. Matt didn’t lose his parents, but dad left when he was little and his mom’s such a train wreck may as well be dead, lol.

Cassidy

Every minority character, but specifically anyone who has a tie to Bonnie, it’s ridiculous!

I Am Not Chamari

I have found the Silas thing interesting from the start, so I am coming from that perspective, but I kind of like it that he isn't really trying to IMPERSONATE Stefan. Sure, he's around town and people assume he's Stefan, but it feels less like Katherine's games of pretending to be Elena while kissing other people, going to school events, etc. Or, maybe I'm reading into it too much. But Silas is pretty much acting like Silas, or, rather, he's not putting any effort into acting like Stefan. Regarding the whole "everyone is expendable thing, it is PAINFULLY obvious that the characters of color are barely given any story, screentime or substance and are killed off for funsies, while their white counterparts get much more story, development and screentime. We saw it with Megan's character this very episode. It's arguably worse with the Black characters. They introduce characters that are essentially props for the storyline. The fact that we didn't see one of Bonnie's parents until Season 3 is criminal. And even then, they abandoned that story, only to introduce Bonnie's dad in Season 4. People HAVE to notice the lack of respect given to Bonnie and her family, in addition to every other POC character out there. When they killed Jenna, Uncle John, Isobel, Caroline's Dad, Carol, Jenna, Ric, etc., they got a sympathetic and epic send-off. Hell, even though Tyler's dad was a complete jackass, we still got a lot out of him when he was around. I cannot say the same for Bonnie's Dad. We know that it was a way to show Silas' evilness, but with every other parent/guardian that was killed, that wasn't the only reason that it happened. Also, they killed those other characters only after we got to spend an extended amount of time with them and after their children/family got to spend time with them. We have gotten NO time with Bonnie's dad, and there has only been a handful of scenes with Bonnie and her father. Bonnie's father being killed is only another way to see Bonnie suffer, while everyone else gets to be happy. It's insulting.

I Am Not Chamari

Also, I think The Originals has more minority characters, but I don't really think it's that much better at not killing them... But, you'll form your own opinion about that, I guess.

Fly on the Wall

No, I agree with this and said as much before. This is is why I think the main problem was TVD not having another POC on the main cast because people say Originals is better, but it’s really not. They kill just as many POC in minor roles (as well as white and Asian characters etc) so the key seems to be getting longer standing arcs for POC on the main cast, for most people. Which is totally fair, I grant you. I think Virginia and Louisiana played the biggest factor in the casts, but thankfully Legacies is still fairly diverse being a one of kind school despite being in Virginia as well.

Fly on the Wall

Agreed on the Silas point. Paul just gets to be so wonderfully Silas and it’s refreshing to watch for me, personally.

Great premiere! This is when I originally stopped watching (somewhere during Season 5) so I can't wait to see it play out with you!
