It's unfortunate you don't care so intensely lol it's like you feel like a lot of this season is pointless when everything really does have a reason and is building to something. This isn't my favourite season either but it has also had some of the most amazing moments and eps (once more with feeling) excited for you to get into the end of this season.

Harriet Loughnan

I'm sorry that this season is a real struggle for you. I appreciate hearing your opinions on all the things. Sadly I don't know if the payoff at the end will make it worthwhile. But maybe you'll regain your enthusiasm going into the final season. At least the Spike/Buffy thing seems to have ended!

I noticed you said they didn't really dive into Buffy's coming back from Heaven thing when they literally touch on it every episode. Everything she's doing is a direct result of not only her coming back from a peaceful place, but from all of the trauma that our hero's been subjected to over the past 5 years. So to finally have this one moment of true happiness only to get sucked right back into hell on Earth? Of course she's going to act this way. What you hate about this season is what I love about it. Lol Every episode, they're going to show you just how bad Buffy's mental state is, and it isn't going to be some simple, quick fix either, which is why I admire the season so much despite how lackluster some of the episodes have been (this one included). Its just that despite that, Buffy's arc this season has always been the most consistent, the most interesting, and the most affecting (to me anyway) precisely because they don't shy away from how a person dealing with depression acts. The dishes pile up, you forget the garbage, you neglect your own family and friends, you sleep with a person you hate. Not everyone has the same experiences with depression but those kind of things happen to people, and I'm one of those people. It's hard to put in words why I've always felt an attachment to this season and particularly Buffy's arc but it's mostly because I relate to it. Another thing I have to defend is Spuffy, specifically its fans. When you say things like "some of you guys really enjoy this stuff", I promise you it's not because of the reasons you think. No fan in history genuinely thinks that Spuffy is a healthy, solid, relationship at this point. But relationships like this exist, and theres power in representation. Like wow, I'm not the only person dealing with these dark feelings and emotions. I'm not the only one who makes mistakes. Yada yada yada. End word vomit. Lol

I agree that the past 4 episodes aren't my favorite. But all good things come to those who wait. I personally think the finale is worth it.

I agree that willow should do more, she's not making dinner for Dawn, she has no job. We don't see her clean up the house, when buffy works. It's a bit odd really.

I also hated the way Riley left in season 5, but he wasn't all in the wrong either. You keep speaking about him leaving because she was too strong for him, which is wrong. He loved her strength, but he was a military man, used to be part of a unit and contributing. He felt helpless from injuries where he was pushed back for his safety. Buffy was right in protecting him, but his mental state was damaged from way back to Maggie Walsh, the drugs he was fed, his heart condition from those chemicals and injuries - then the whole vamp feeding thing which I hated so much. AND Buffy never said I love you to Riley, like seriously, never. That had to hurt. She was damaged too after all, after Angel and then dipshit Parker. Their relationship was flawed and it ended because of it, and in the end, that was the right decision, though f him for leaving when her mom was sick. I don't particularly like this episode either, the only great scene was at the end with Buffy breaking it off with Spike and calling him William. I do appreciate the sort-of closure the episodes provides, but yeah, very bottom of the barrel episode. I do think you've missed a bit about Buffy's trauma, it shows up in every episode one way or the other, the whole spike thing is a mess. But one important thing was from gone, when she admits to Willow she was scared when she heard she might disolve. That was actually a huge breakthrough, because she truly has wanted to be dead since she came back.

Melissa

100% yes to charmed. I agree with you about this season and wish they'd tackled the Buffy depression storyline differently but I still really enjoy the last part of this season (starting next episode).

I'm not sure you're really getting what is going on in this season. You keep saying they dropped the Buffy being ripped from heaven story line but they're literally doing a "deep dive" into what that actually means. She experienced pure happiness in heaven. Anything life has to offer can't really compare which leads to some severe depression for Buffy. To the point where she is literally choosing destructive behavior just so she can feel something. She even knows this going into it back in the musical episode when she sings to spike "This isn't real but I just want to feel." You're seeing this character slowly unravel because of where she was after she died and how she struggles with her mental health after being brought back. I guess you're wanting her to talk about it every episode but what else is there to really explore? She was in heaven. Now she's not. Not really seeing anything we need to know passed that unless we're okay with the Buffy character taking a back seat in that narrative. The story was always going to be about the repercussions and how they affect Buffy's mental state because its the only place for the story to go. Sorry you're not digging this season.

Also yes..please react to original charmed!!!!

The point of Riley coming back was to make Buffy see her own life clearly, by reminding her of who she is. Riley sees her as a strong, independent woman whose purpose is rooted in life (saving lives) and action. Conversely, Buffy has been feeling weak, stagnant, dependent (upon Spike/meaningless and degrading sex, to make her feel wanted and alive), directionless, and doomed with a purpose rooted in death and darkness. She needed a wake-up call, to see herself through the eyes of someone who loves her in a healthy way (i.e., who wants the best for her) instead of through the eyes of Spike, who wants to possess her and is willing to isolate her and drag her down into darkness to that end. I'm glad he returned and I don't think the msg was "wow she really f*cked up by letting him go", but rather: "look at this positive, healthy, supportive relationship her ex now has compared to what Buffy has with Spike. Buffy deserves that. Please, Buffy. Realise that you deserve what he has!" And, thankfully, she did realise. Riley's high-stakes mission also serves to emphasise the triviality of Buffy's current nemeses (The Trio) - she even brings them up in order to make the point that she really hasn't had a lot going on lately. Therein lies the "point" of The trio. Their complete and utter pointlessness, and what that says about Buffy's emotional landscape (i.e., she feels like her life is empty and pointless). This season is about Buffy's life struggles, and life struggles in general (depression, addiction, etc.). The Trio serves only to highlight that. The Big Bads on this show have *always* acted as metaphors for something. This isn't a new thing the show is trying; it's just the first time the Big Bad has been this pathetic. But that's the point. This episode was probably one of the most important ones in terms of communicating the season’s arc, I think.

Willow is a full time student. And struggling herself with some mental health difficulties and big big life problems. Not that odd.

Just adding: the ep was not about "closure", it is not about Riley or Buffy + Riley's relationship at all, and if you think it is then you are not understanding this season. The point was to shine a harsh light upon Buffy's life.

idk i love s6...🧍

Yes 100% to the original charmed! Amazing show

I'm not sure he doesn't get the point of the season. The whole show is allegorical - basically this season being the part where Buffy finally goes into the "real" world, post college, and finds out that it's incredibly banal. That contrast between where she was and where she is now - heaven vs. the real world - the world being a hard place to live in - is a tone that almost never lets up. That's a lot of hours of ennui to sit through. There's a line in this episode where Buffy actually complains about having to do laundry. That's it in a nutshell. And it's a tough watch unless you really like spending time with the characters in their current state... which is harder given that Xander and Anya are kind of annoying, Willow spends much of the season going into a complete tailspin and Tara, who is probably the one person on the show you'd genuinely like, isn't exactly getting a ton of screen time. And the trio is mostly annoying. Basically what I'm saying is that you can completely understand what the season is going for, and even think that they achieved their goal, and still not find it a lot of fun to watch.

For me it is the pacing of the episodes, where the first half is very slow, and the second half is better and has all the action, that makes this season , up til now, hard to watch.

I hated Riley when he was on the show. He’s my least favorite character to ever be in the credits as a main cast member. But I really appreciate what they did with him in this episode. The writers used him as a tool to remind Buffy of how great she is. His speech to her at the end was really great and it’s the push that Buffy needed to get her back going in the right direction and out of her funk. I think it works really well. For that I think this is a pretty good episode. It’s kinda fun having Riley back but thank god he isn’t staying.

Ray D

Also about season 6 in general, I didn’t love it on my first watch through but have really come to appreciate it more with repeated viewings. I still have problems with some of it. But in general I see the themes and what they were trying to do in the overall story much more. It’s probably the season that’s improved the most for me over time.

I think you're having difficulty to accept this season for what it is. The geek trio is SUPPOSED to look dumb because they pale in comparison to what Buffy has faced already, but they also pale in comparison to the fact Buffy is suffering from depression. She lost her mother, she lost Giles in a way, she's alone taking care of a teenage girl, she can't get a normal job like everyone else because she's the Slayer, so she's stuck in a life she basically hates. Everyone expects EVERYTHING from her but she gets NOTHING for it. She went to heaven and now she's stuck in her own personal hell. So the fact that the trio is so LAME is done on purpose. They're not the focus right now. Not like Glory or like the Initiative or the Master. Buffy's adult life being in ruins and her mental state are the focus. And Riley was, if you think about it, the ONE person in Buffy's life who absolutely viewed her as the AMAZING force of nature that she was. He was in awe with her almost all of the time to the point he felt inferior whenever they were with each other. So he was used to remind her that even though some things in her life are out of her power to choose, she doesn't HAVE to be so miserable. She can go back to being that person again. I mean, she should go to THERAPY but you know... LMAO. Hang in there, I promise that the end of the season will AT LEAST make you go "oh, okay, I SEE why we had to go through all that, this is good". At least I hope so xD
