I don't particularly find that all of Scrubs' episode are really up to today's TV standards, but it's still one of the shows that can pull of absolutely sensational episoes. This episodes is one of them. Probably one of the best 20 minute episodes ever created. He dies in the middle of this episode btw. There are a lot of subtle hints to when he dies, but the one that is easiest to interpret is the fact that he says: "He'll have his camera with him till the day he dies". After JD tells Dr. Cox that someone had died midway through the episode, Ben also stops having his camera with him.

That was the point of the misdirection. If JD was too emotional it would have been too obvious. And to be honest, JD only met Ben two times.

I can't believe you guessed it so early. I had no idea the first time and was so shocked and emotional when I realized what happened. It was shocking because aside from him not getting a check up, he seemed fine while the old man had heart problems so it was assumed to be him. I don't think JD did anything wrong. Ben just hadn't been going to a doctor so I guess the cancer had come back. Great and sad episode. One of my top episodes of the show.

I was fooled too by the twist! It was so sad 😢

"Where do you think you are?" breaks me every time. Even when you know it's coming, it still just hurts when it finally hits Cox. As far as J.D.'s breaking of the news, I would argue that it adds an extra layer of tragedy, not just serving as a misdirect. Doctors have to give that news to loved ones all of the time, and they do it just like that. Even though Ben was a friend, J.D. defaulted to giving the news to Dr. Cox like he were the family of any other patient.

Not a huge fan of Scrubs as a whole, but this episode does not fall in that category at all. Tears every time, it just hits too close to home.

My Screw Up is the best episode of any television series by far. This, along with My Musical, My Lunch, My Catalyst, the S1 Finale and My Finale are the bullet points of the series in my opinion. Episodes where, through either inventive writing, emotional weight or both, the series really hits it's peak.
