Next episode got me completely hooked onto the show!

MyseriousMage

First sounds like you are enjoying the show so far which is awesome, as you have already guessed the show is an anthology (completely separate stories, though occasionally some episodes have easter eggs for previous episodes). They all have the overarching theme of technology gone wrong which is part of what makes the title awesome. "Black Mirror" or "dark reflection" each episode is really meant to make you take a look at our society. The name also is a reference technology in terms of when your screen is off you can see your reflection in a black mirror. Also the symbolism of the title sequence cracking like a broken screen both in reference to technology going wrong but also that what you see afterwards is not contained within this fiction behind a separating layer of glass but is seeping into our real lives. Also another easter egg in nearly every episode is an actual cracked screen or mirror as another nod to the title sequence. Now on to this episode, I'm so glad to see that you enjoyed it it's one of my favorites but most reactors (and commenters) seem not to which saddens me. Between solo watches and reaction vids I've seen this episode at least a dozen times but probably closer to two dozen and I still get goosebumps during Bing's rant everytime. Such as amazing performance by the actor. The biggest complaint that gets thrown around is that not much is happening but that is the entire point of the episode in general and Bing's rant specifically. The bikes (used for power generation) represent the menial and often mind-numbing work that most of the population had to do to earn the money (merits) to survive, while dreaming of finding a way to escape the tedium (Hot Shot). As if even just that isn't enough the have Bing cave at the end and become exactly what he was raging against in the first place, as a metaphor for the people that complain about how we deify celebrities and how everyone just wants their 15 minutes of fame but when given the chance do exactly that jump at it. I love this episode and it's symbolism and it just hurts me everytime it's not appreciated because of its "slow pace". It hurts even more because that is one of the points the episode is making, the world around Bing is filled with loud flashing lights and pellets of instant entertainment with no subtlety, represented best by "Wraith's Babes" and everyone around Bing is sucked into it. All of that is a criticism of how unbelievably short attention spans have become (several characters constantly switching between things and not even letting them finish) and our constant need for unending entertainment. Which all makes it hurt harder when people criticize the pacing as slow when it was obviously a deliberate choice so that you could understand the world. I always see this ranked as one of the lowest episodes in the show and while there are definitely episodes with a more gripping story and edge of seat pacing, just for the sheer criticism of our society this episode stays towards the top of my ranking definitely upper half probably top 5. (And that's not to say that other episodes don't have the same tone of criticizing our society but I feel this episode is one of the best at it) Sorry the rant, but glad to see you starting this journey and can't wait to see more.

I love this episode, too, and even show it in class for my grad seminar on mass media theory.

The actor's name is Daniel Kaluuya, who has gone on to star in "Get Out" and "Judas and the Black Messiah" with starring roles in "Widows" and "Black Panther" as well. I'll admit, this is not my favorite episode, mostly because I struggled with the relationship between Bing and Abi and did not really feel as strongly about it as I felt that I needed to, in order for the story to hit as hard. She also really wasn't a good singer to me. But, very strong performances, a VERY strong premise and a depressingly relevant message. I would rate this episode as a 7 or 8.
