When you're like "I can't believe Angel didn't show up" I was literally talking to my TV saying "wait for it, Steven, wait for it."

SweetSummit

Also I just reached the point in the episode so I don't know if you reflected later but the song Giles is listening to is the one he and Joyce listened to in season 3's Band Candy. He's grieving in his own, private way.

CeNedra

I just came to the comments to say that 🙄😂

You are correct about the scene with Giles. It is a call back. Specifically the song he was listening to. It is the song that him and Joyce were listening to together in episode Band Candy, Season 3, at Giles home. Also the same episode that they slept together.

...And I just realized someone already said this ^^ LOL

cil

the song gilles was listening to is the same song he and joyce were listening to when they were teenagers in "band candy". kind of a neat detail.

I'm literally in tears over the final scene, like, messy, snotty tears, and then: "All right, two depressing ass episodes back to back, love to see it!" and I fucking CHOKED 😂😂😂 Ty, I needed that.

Kristine Sutherland who played Joyce informed Joss that she wanted to leave the show to move to Europe to spend time with her daughter (who was residing there) and that’s how the tragic yet beautiful episode of The Body came about. Joss says he would have never planned to write off Joyce otherwise.

I also thought Willow’s actions were disappointing/weirdly out of character.. Spike on the other hand, however stupid, I get.. but also, he would have had his ass handed to him had she come back wrong and chaos ensued. He was also risking possibly scaring/risking Buffy and Dawn’s life. I mean.. the vagueness of “these kind of spells go wrong/ they come back wrong” kind of leaves a lot of bad ambiguity. But I get his narrow thinking more than whatever Willow’s perspective was. To me, you can tell it’s not written by Joss though, the episode as a whole. I wish the aftermath of The Body would have been a little more like ..the Body to be honest. But I did like the episode and really appreciate it in certain ways. The last scene really tops the episode off for me as an 8. The dialogue, the acting. I didn’t realize Buffy’s reasoning until I was an adult 😭

That end scene always gets me! And tbh what you were saying before Angel arrives always brings up a valid point. I feel the fandom go on way too much about this Watch guide too much! As long as you watch Buffy 5.15 before Angel 2.15 for example you're golden. Always watch Buffy's episode first. I never understand why fans go on about doing four of this show and then 2 of that one because after the first season of angel it's not a crossover show as much. X

BTW, if you found Spike's battle with the demon beast a little lacking, after you're done with the show you should hear James Marster's story about it. He usually tells it at conventions and stuff, and it's really funny :)

Wow, I wasn’t expecting to get so emotional while watching this. It’s been a number of years since I last saw it, and to be honest, given that I’m a Buffy/Angel shipper, the only thing I really remembered about it was that Angel comes back to comfort Buffy in the cemetery (though I’d forgotten that they actually kissed in that scene). The last time they saw each other was after the Faith incident in LA when Angel came to Sunnydale to apologise and ended up fighting Riley. He and Buffy did leave things on a mostly-resolved note though.

I understand why Joyce left. But it's too bad they didn't make these episodes anyway. And It shouldn't have been a reason Joyce died (a specific storyline or grounding the show reason) except the fact that things happen and people died. I feel like the way you are thinking takes away from the enjoyment of the story. Not a lot, but definitely a fair bit. All i am saying is that it was much more interesting for me thinking about how she just died for no good reason (like most people do, sadly).

Tammy L. Faulkner

They had to get rid of Joyce... if they just killed her off and didn't spend any kind of time on losing her it would have been like nothing really happen and the loss what just a WHATEVER kinda thing. Nothing wrong with 2 full episodes about LOOSING a character.

The transition to the sex scene between Anya and Xander makes sense. A lot of people deal with loss by seeking comfort like that. It's kind of a common trope...sex after funerals. But anyway, it makes sense for Anya and Xander specifically because they are always focused on sex. It makes sense they'd deal in this way. As we've seen throughout the series...Anya is continuing to struggle with having come from the Demon world and what being alive means to her. This is another small step along that path. Their reasoning behind bringing resurrection is that it's a natural question for them to address in their world. Technically vampires get up and walk around after death. They clearly have magic in the show. This is the first major death since magic has been such a big part of the show. It's only natural they would address it. Otherwise it might have seemed odd that no one broached the topic what should be possible in their world. Spike might have known Dawn would go along by herself if he didn't help. It's in the same way he went along with her to break into the magc box earlier this season. Dawn wasn't going to just drop this. That's also why Willow did what she did. If you listened to what Dawn read when opening the book...it's about why resurrection is bad. Willow was giving her the book to read so Dawn would understand it's a bad idea. It backfired because as Tara reminded Willow it ...it refers to specific books on resurrection.

When Buffy is still at home after finding her mom she goes to look outside and you can kids playing. Later there is a shot of Xanders car getting a parking ticket. Those scenes are showing that the horror the scoobies are going through does not matter to the rest of the world. At the end Dawn is attacked by a vampire that shows the supernatural world is still there and doesn't care Joyce died. It reminded me of when my daughter died. All around me peoples life still went on like nothing happened. It was a remarkable artistic choice. Geeked out nation didn't get it that's why he sees the vampire at the end as a bad choice. Most shows would have had music in the background to add to the feels. The Body is so powerful it wasn't needed.

One thing you, and many, missed in this episode is that the song Giles is listening to alone, is the song he and Joyce were listening to together in the house, getting high, in Band Candy. It's supposed to convey that Giles did have feelings for Joyce.

CeNedra

I am so sorry you lost your daughter, I couldn't imagine anything more heart breaking to go through, stay strong ❤
