I think it's amazing that throughout the episode just like you I had no idea which Ward was telling the truth. And while I don't agree with what Grant did at the end, there was probably a sense of catharsis he got from it that freed him of a lot of his issues. Not that it'll help, no doubt.

In 1989 after Reinhardt/Whitehall got out of prison, he experimented on a Chinese woman who was unaffected by the obelisk and who appeared not to age. Whitehall made himself young again and discarded the woman’s body. Along comes Skye’s father who holds the body in his arms and vows, “Oh, my love. I’ll find him. I’ll do to him what he did to you.” So, was that woman Skye’s mother, you ask? Like you said, this show makes you pay attention to the details; and you’re definitely paying close attention.

Additionally, in 1989 his crew had gathered all of the elders from a Chinese village which seems similar to the story told to Coulson and May about the 084 (skye) in season 1

Forgot how much I liked season 2. Skye's dad Cal makes me laugh, scared, and sad

Kyle MacLachlan is such an incredible actor, and he brings such a great depth to the role of Cal. This whole middle section of season 2 is great, and I'm glad you're enjoying it and picking up on all the smaller details. :)
