Yeah... this is a 10. 9 at worst. You don't need to be totally clear on what's going on right now... Murder mysteries generally don't require you to know everything that's happening while the story is unfolding. Wondering what Hannibal's goals are, what he's up to, is part of the storytelling method. You need to relax and just enjoy the stuff you pointed out - the incredible acting, cinematography, art direction and atmosphere of the show. The words "horrifyingly beautiful" sum this show up.

Here's one review I think will be a little helpful, though I think it's going to introduce an element you haven't considered yet. I do feel better sharing it knowing that the reviewer doesn't know more than you do at this point: https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/hannibal-episode-3-review-potage/ The comment about the copycat from the last episode has confused you, I say you should disregard it. And yes, you are definitely picking up what this episode is putting down. And your observations are spot on. And yes-- this was on NBC prime time. The key, I believe is that the production worked with the network to have a solid understanding of what was allowed or not... the blood on the show is dark, therefore 'less disturbing' than it would otherwise be... those type of things. Lastly, the set/food designer for this show has an awesome blog where she talks about how certain foods were displayed and eventually, she shares a recipe with each episode. (Which are later combined and published as a book called Feeding Hannibal: A Connoisseur's Cookbook.) If you want, I'm happy to post the episode's link directly here so you or others interested don't get spoiled trying to find it.

One more thing, the names of Season 1's episodes all refer to a traditional French cuisine structure. Here is a quote from a great resource, I would share it but it would spoil other seasons. So here's an excerpt and I'll update you as we go forward: The first episode, "Apéritif", refers to a pre-drink meal that is intended to come before any appetizer course as a warm up both for digestion and to engage the diners' appetites. The next course, and episode, is "Amuse-Bouche", which traditionally describes one-bite snacks that show off the chef's unique style and prepares the guests for the upcoming meal. This makes sense as the second episode title, because it's still in the exposition phases of Fuller's story. "Potage" and "Oeuf" (episodes 3 and 4) refer to soup and egg courses, respectively, which are commonly seen as appetizers or hors d'oeuvres.

The show is confusing on purpose...you aren't supposed to know Hannibal's motives yet but they have given clear evidence, especially in the last episode, as to what Hannibal is capable of and, partially, how he is involved so far. What we don't know is why he is the copycat, Will mentioned that it was a, "negative in order to show a positive," describing the girl mounted on the stag head with missing lungs. So it seems Hannibal was shoving him in the right direction, curious of where it would lead Will, maybe. Him 'framing' nicholas boyle was just a convenient opportunity i think.

Thank you for giving "Hannibal" a chance, i was ecstatic that someone was finally reacting to this show and thus became a patron immediately :) This show is dark, thought-provoking, and constructed like a psychological dreamscape. It basically makes you connect the dots, even if you only have a few pieces of the puzzle in front of you. The show will make everything clear in the end, but basically you are supposed to be confused on how and why things happened in that specific way. You are supposed to be anxious and kind of falling into madness right along with the characters, so don't worry - you're doing great :) The brain hurts, i know xD You picked up on the right things and i know it feels like you're missing something, which is also why i personally think this show is best watched on a binge or in short periods of time between episodes, 'cause a lot of info might be forgotten by the time you get to the next one. This show also has a lot of nuances in the dialogue that might escape you, if you're not paying attention, some of which, i found out, one can only pick up if they rewatch the show, hahah~ About that comment that confused you - i can't blame you, because when i read it myself i did a double-take xD At first i understood it the same way you did (and was also confused, because it seems misleading), but it turns out it was just written in a confusing matter. Look: "Hannibal has already killed someone in this show - the "copycat" murder in the first episode." - this sentence describes the scene of the copycat murder, not the murderer of the copycat. It was supposed to be understood like this in my opinion: "Hannibal has already killed someone in this show - the "copycat" murder (scene) in the first episode (was his doing)."

Please continue this amazing series . You haven't seen nothing yet. It gets so good especially once you enter Season 2 . But Season 1 is a great set up for everything to come .

Hannibal is the copycat killer, he also killed Abigail's friend and made it look like the redhead guy that Abigail killed did it. Hannibal told Abigail that she should hide the body because he wanted her to "owe" him for helping her and not tell anyone that he he was the man on the phone. I think its supposed to be really stressful and confusing now lol. i rate this one 9.5-10

It is confusing in the beginning. Its supposed to make you wonder and form your theories. This is a rewarding show when it comes to answers if you are patient. Right now it just gives you a glimpse of just how manipulative Abigail and Hannibal really are. It makes you wonder if she helped her dad. Basically this episode makes you think about it long after its over.
