This episode was just an excuse to showcase Kristin Chenoweth. Sheā€™s a very accomplished Broadway actress. She was the original Glinda in Wicked on broadway. Sheā€™s also been on a show called Pushing Daisies. I can understand not liking her voice. Her voice is catered to showtunes and theatrical kind of singing. I thought she blew Rachel out of the water tbh. especially, on that song, she had way more feeling. Her guest appearance was a turning point for the show because it opened up possibility for future broadway singers/actors to make an appearance.

Kristin Chenoweth has a very broadway style of singing which is different than anything else bc you have to really project & her voice is so powerful it just seems too big for the screen really. So she is definitely a standard, but it is different than what most of us are used to.

Most Pop music features vocals with not a lot of vibrato. You see that more with Broadway singing and a ton of it in operatic singing. When you hear a lot of broadway material performed in various appearances and shows itā€™s often done in a pop style that robs the song of its emotional core. One of the most commonly done ones is an early solo in Les Miserables called ā€œI had a Dreamā€. Iā€™ve heard a ton of people singing it who have very nice voices, but that song is all about being later in life and knowing that all of your dreams have been ripped away from you and your living a nightmare. If you ever hear sung nicely, the artist has done a terrible job. Both later songs done be April are rougher songs (popular music wise) and her vocals are a better match (Heartā€™s lead singer is actually a very solid vocalist so that certainly helps on Alone). Sandy was actually right about Rachelā€™s performance (though a terrible teacher), the music should have real emotions in the vocals.

Glee starts out as a Black Comedy, that focuses equally on the adult life of Will and two of his students (Rachel and Finn). The characters are meant to be significantly over the top. With how scripts are completed and then filmed, almost 8 to 9 episodes have been scripted with probably 6 to 7 filmed before the producers get feedback from the audiences on what works and what doesnā€™t; for whoever is turning in to watch the programming. You will certainly see a change in the show, and see some characters expand, some change and some get reduced roles and almost all of that is feedback based on what the audience likes and doesnā€™t like once it starts to air.

As Mark said the first thirteen episodes were written in a bubble, so the creators had no idea how the show was being received. So the first few episodes are very Adult heavy and focus a lot on Will, Sue, Finn and Rachel. Itā€™s also very vey dark humor. Meaning, things that are offensive pass off as comedy due to the tone of the show. This also changed as the show evolves. The later seasons definitely branch out and give other characters development.

Itā€™s kind of hard listening/watching to some of these early ā€œgroupā€ performances like ā€œSomebody To Loveā€ and not comparing them to later (much better) performances where they didnā€™t use random background vocals and showcased more of the cast. Like, ā€œLast Nameā€ was alright and well-sung, but it wasnā€™t even a group number at all, it was just April singing with the characters that I actually care about swaying in the background, and thereā€™s no emotional connection to it, so itā€™s in the bottom tier of Glee performances for me.

Actually, a lot of the background vocals for the season 1 performances were done by the cast. Like the background harmonies and oohs and aahs. Itā€™s after season 1 they stopped because it got to be too much. They started using studio singers more in season 2 for the backing vocals. Kevin and Jenna even talked about this on their podcast. You are right that the performances do get better. I do like the early music because it reflects the group, rough around the edges and scrappy, but it is an acquired taste. Somebody to Love is sooo good because of Mercedesā€™ voice alone.

Also, donā€™t take this the wrong way, but it hurts me whenever you say Rachel ā€œisnā€™t that greatā€ of a singer, because I think sheā€™s AMAZING. But of course you are entitled to your opinion. Itā€™s just I feel like you are understating her talent a little bit because you donā€™t like her much as a character. I love her as a character (most of the time), but itā€™s fine not to like her, because she is meant to have a lot of unlikable traits, but her talent is undeniable. But then you havenā€™t even heard her best songs yet.

Teresina

ā€œSomebody To Loveā€ was great. I didnā€™t mean to imply that it wasnā€™t. The background vocals just sounded kind of generic to me, and I couldnā€™t help compare it to later group performances that I love so much more. STL was still my favorite song of the ep by far, and one of my favorite songs from S1 (this might be largely because Queen is one of my favorite bands of all time).

Kristin Chenoweth has been in a lot of TV shows ever since the 90ā€™s. The first thing I ever saw her in was Frasier. She had a reoccurring role as Frasierā€™s seemingly cute but surprisingly vicious agent, Portia. Sheā€™s always entertaining and funny in everything Iā€™ve seen her in, but I just didnā€™t like April taking the spotlight away from the kids. I like Aprilā€™s voice for the most part in ā€œMaybe This Timeā€ but she made me cringe a bit towards the end there. I much prefer her duet with Will.

A lot of the performers, including Rachel improve dramatically. I would assume a part of it is studio enhancement, but working with vocal coaching specific to the show certainly didnā€™t hurt. I also expect that as Fox saw the money they were starting to make from music sales, they would put a little more into that aspect of the show.

I think Rachel grows on you. At some point I was like why is she like this? But now Iā€™m a huge Rachel fan. Her talent though seems endless. The only one song I didnā€™t like from her is the one in the Pilot.
