I think the reason why it's always the male partner who is the special one and the female one is the straight shooter has both to do with the Bell curve as well as what is accepted by the audience. The reason why there are much more male geniuses than females is the same as to why there are much more mentally challenged males than females. The grade of intelligence is spread much more wore within males than females. That doesn't mean there are no female geniuses, it's just that the probability is much lower. But genius often means that the brain is capable of executing one thing perfectly while being less equipped to be an all-rounder. That's why geniuses often have ticks or oddities. The second one is that people are more accepting of odd behavior when it's portrayed by a male character. You can see it across genres. In comedies it's mostly the man that is the goofball, the guy who never grew up but somehow managed to find a well-grounded wife who keeps his eccentricities in check. It's been observed that people (ironically especially women) are much less accepting of a woman who behaves out of the norm.

Nice to see this one pop up. I'd say you've got a pretty good bead on the show -- "CBS crime procedural" tells you a whole lot about what to expect, really. That said, I do think that Elementary's biggest strengths are Miller and Liu as Holmes and Watson, and I'd argue that it's one of the most interesting modernization of Holmes specifically when it comes to adapting the characters. As the most obvious point of comparison, BBC's Sherlock is great for the performances of Cumberbatch and Freeman; Miller and Liu in Elementary are excellent actors themselves, but Elementary is also much more willing to add their own wrinkles and nuances to these classic characters, rather than simply updating them to a modern setting.

While you may say there are more male geniuses out there (And more males suffering from quirks), the fact is when you have one gender that is privileged over another, you are going to find more who have been recognized for things that the other gender may also be equally recognized for, were they paid as much attention to in that respect. It happens with racism too, and other categories. It could be that the problem lay in the same area it lays for reasons why females with autism are only now starting to be diagnosed more often (Just not as much effort was put into seeing it and noting the differences between how males and females are raised and socialized so how it presents can be different) and ADHD (Same issue. As someone with this condition, I wasn't dx until I was an adult because my behaviors were just seen as me being a daydreamer, scatterbrained, my input in classroom settings wasn't as important - teachers male and female teachers even tend to call upon male students more often than female students. And if I'd been a boy, they might have been more 'concerned' about my symptoms. Since they weren't, I struggled a great deal.). It's possible that female geniuses also are under diagnosed. Just saying. The reason to me that Watson was always male until now was because he was written as a male originally and people don't like change.

I like Elementary. I don't watch it as regularly as I did the first couple of seasons, but it's a solid show and I like Holmes and Watson's dynamic a lot.

I was skeptical at first of this americanized version of Sherlock Holmes. Lucy Liu and Jonny Lee Miller performances convinced me. As for the female character being the cop and the male one the specialist, I have one glaring very famous exception to that assumption: Bones. Also it doesn’t apply in this case because neither of them is a cop. The case of the week was interesting and I like that Watson contribution was essential from the start. She is the one who found out about the significance of the rice while Sherlock was in jail after his emotional temper tantrum. Quite a subversion of the trope. It shows the choice to have a female will not be used as a superficial twist. As for the alarm clock, Sherlock didn’t say if you need an alarm clock to wake you up for your work, it means you don’t enjoy going to work (most people do), he said she needed 2 alarm clocks. It’s a bit of a stretch but I can relate. The term you were looking for was “deductive reasoning”.

The show is a blend of case of the week and some longer arcs.
