You questioned how they’re given their names and it took me forever to figure this out but essentially they want to strip the handmaids of their identity. They go by their commanders name. June’s commander is Fred, so her name is Offred. “Of Fred” meaning she belongs to him under their law. The other handmaids names also begin with “of”

Great show. I appreciate that you are willing to watch despite your reservations. Yes it will make you angry and sad and also worried about the slippery slope of social conventions, politics and patriarchy. I think that it is supposed to be current times or slightly in the future. You’ll find soon why they have to change their name and what Offred means.

This show is so overrated.

The show is based on book by Margaret Atwood, she had a cameo in this episode at 36:02 (woman that slapped June) . The show is overrated, but certainly worth watching once. It gets more complicate and interesting as it goes along. The execution scene is actually very smart, because controlling party knows they can't remove anger and hate from their captives, so they channel it on a subject of their choosing, letting the women get some emotional release, while keeping control. Also, I did some very basic calculations and for the entire USA (of which Gilead is a part of), there are maybe 30,000 women capable of producing living, healthy children, and maybe 600,000 for the entire world - so people are getting desperate.

It's based on a 1985 book: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Handmaid%27s_Tale

I thought I gave this show a shot because it had Yvonne Strahovski (Chuck), Elisabeth Moss (The West Wing, Mad Men) and Alexis Bledel (Gilmore Girls) in it, but this scenario and way of storytelling is just not my cup of tea.
